Hey guys so if you've ever read any of my other posts on electrical you already know I'm far from the best at it. I'm working on a 74 cb750 I currently have my bike almost ready to be prepped for paint just waiting for a few more things to arrive. In the meantime I've been studying the wire diagram and trying to figure out what I can do without when putting the bike back together. I was curious if there was a way to do without the starter motor safety unit, the regulator and the silicon rectifier? It may be a stupid question but again I'm not good with electric and these parts are all in a very sorry state. Also if it matters I'm planning on having led turn signals and tail light.
What's the starter motor safety unit? If you mean the starter solenoid - you need it if you use the starter motor. You most certainly need a Regulator/rectifier.
No there's a little box called the starter motor safety unit. From what I can tell it prevents the bike from starting while in gear. I've heard of some people getting rid of them by crossing the circuts themselves but at the same time I've also heard some of them blowing fuses after doing so, anyone have any advice on that? http://forums.sohc4.net/index.php?topic=60528.0 Also I know I need a regulator and rectifier but don't modern bikes have the regulator and rectifier as one unit?
What is the point of removing these parts? Will it make you faster? Are they so big that you cant find a spot to hid them? If running a stock oil tank then I dont see the need to change much from stock as the tank and covers hide everything well from the factory.
While everyone has to start some place, it might be better for you to learn what these parts do before thinking about removing things. The web can be good for help, but bikes and things dont get done here, they get done in the shop. You could simply unplug the req/reg and find out really fast if you need that on the bike. Teach a man to fish kinda thing...
The street legal thing also comes up. Some use the cop out that they dont plan to ride that much, or they have a cop friend, or they just dont care. All well and good, but needs to be thought about.
Also why worry about this until after the bike is running and on the road? Having no starter will make tuning the bike more of a pain in the butt then it needs to be. Even more so when dealing with cheap pods and bad exhausts.
Yeah sorry the bike needs to be street legal for NYS so that requires headlight tail light and blinkers, not positive about horn being needed and I wouldn't mind mapping the electric start for now. Only reason I was asking about the rectifier, reg, and safety unit are all in bad shape. The rectifier is the old one which is not enclosed and very bulky and I assume at one point before I bought this bike that the starter motor safety unit was mounted somewhere but when I got it it was hanging and partially melted from the exhaust. After reading on sohc 4 I found that thread about eliminating it but some people like I said blowing fuses after doing that so I'm also wondering if anyone has experience with getting rid of the starter motor safety unit?
Yes you need a horn in NYS
Also there is a law on the books about how far apart the blinkers need to be. I think its 18in. But that I know no one checks.
They will want to see blinkers, Hi/Lo headlight, tail/brake/running light, horn ect ect to pass and inspection
Still no real idea what you are talking about with the safety unit though. But sounds like something that can only help and no reason to remove
There are kits to replace the req and reg units into one sealed modern unit.
I should of clarified that I wasn't looking to try to run a bike without the regulator and rectifier. I know the regulator obviously regulates current and the rectifier converts ac to dc I was just wondering if there is a unit available for my bike that puts both the regulator and rectifier into one. I would like a new rectifier but they aren't that cheap from what I'm seeing, which is why if I bought one I would just like to condense things into one new unit. The starter safety unit is the only thing I care to remove completely
I'm going to assume a starter safety unit is similar to a sidestand switch? You can bypass those, as it either runs open or closed, whichever your bike needs. Maybe that's all it is? :-\ Good luck sir.
I'm mostly over on sohc4 but I think I can help. I also have a 76 cb750 so my needs are similar( NYS owner too)
There is a ton of choices for changing your reg/rec but after looking around I think oregon motorcycle is the best choice. He offers a one off unit for you that is combined reg/rec built for your bike with the correct wiring and a new plug that plugs in to your harness. I mounted mine on the bottom of my battery tray. There is plenty of options and info he provides. Also, if you screw up something he gives you some credit towards another one. that is, if you kill it. He also is really helpful and has quick shipping
I don't remember deleting my starter safety setup but basically what it does is forces you to pull in the clutch if you are in gear or not spin the starter if you are in gear. I found a lot on sohcforums( dont hate me)
change you fusebox to an atc style. you can find cheap 4 fuse setups or gang together three separate ones. It cleans things up and eliminates more corrosion losses. get rid of your turn signal buzzer, square thing mounted on the headlight ears. not necessary for inspection and drains current. In NYS you are gonna need the turn signals, brakelight, headlight, don't forget a plate light either tool cops will nail you for it.
