What did you want to be when you were younger? and what do you do now or are studying to do now that you're older?

When I was younger I always wanted to be an Archaeologist I was constanly reading books on dinosaurs, now that I'm older I'm studying to go into the computer information technology security field. Haha thinking about it now thats a pretty extreme difference in career choice.

My Dad is an aircraft mechanic. I spent countless hours of my youth with him at work, mostly racing my RC cars around the hangars and ramps of the Indianapolis airport and looking through aircraft parts books while he turned wrenches on private business jets. I loved it. :)

Now I'm an aircraft mechanic. I build and test turbine engines for Rolls-Royce. Spent my day yesterday running an AE3007 in the test cell:

Like the ones in the A-380? I hope that's not hurting you.

I don't really remember what I wanted to be when I grew up, but I spent all my time drawing a lot of technical style drawings and building plastic models. I think I wanted to be an industrial designer, but I had never heard of such a thing at the time. Went to school for it, and now I'm a modelmaker working on prototypes one offs and mockups. It's nice to be able to create in a supportive shop environment, but I do still wish to continue my education into mechanical engineering.

Yes, but smaller.

It's obviously not good for the company as a whole, but the plant I work in doesn't produce parts for or build the engines used on the A380. It'll get sorted out. Engine failures happen, and happen with all makes of engines. The problem will get sorted. ;)

I used to "help" my dad work on cars in the yard and wanted to be a mechanic and went to college for auto body and paint, until I got "the call"; my step brother called and askied if I wanted to learn telephone systems and have been doing it ever since. I think it's time for a change though, seems that somebody put a computer in my telephone. I'm starting school in January for welding and machining. Maybe that will work out. ;-)

I wanted to be a trust fund kid, unfortunately I don't come from a big money family. So I am a prototype technician for a company that makes thermal systems (ie intercoolers, radiators, evaporators.) So now I am trying to go back to school and kiss the right asses to get into one of the engineering position.

When I was a kid, I wanted to be Chuck Yeager. I was convinced that I could build my own Glamorous Glennis and fly off into glory...

Somehow I ended up as this though. (not me... but pretty much what I do quite a bit)

Never gave up on the flying dream though. Ive been designing an experimental aircraft for several years. One of these days when I have a bit more room, and a bit more money perhaps Ill actually start building it.

I wanted to be a fireman at first ten I discovered wrenches . Joind the vol. fire department when I was 16 and still doing it today . Went to votech in highschool for bodywork . Had a few jobs in that field ( no money ) worked in parts store moved on to other ventures . Got a job at a loal fire truck comp.and rebuild and built firetrucks . Drove a truck for a sprinkler supply warehouse for a couple of years then got a job where my dad retired from. Wrenching on public transportation ( buses ). Thats about it

Oddly enough relative to the first post, I was always going to be an architect - from the age of 7 on through high school, but a dislocated jaw and its impact on my Grade 12 math final was enough to put me below the requisite average grades for admission to the program at university.

So I ended up screwing around in university for a year and then had to pick a major, and landed in Anthropology, where I studied some archaeology.

Then after graduating with of course no prospects, I moved to Toronto and got into telecommunications. Ended up in IT, playing with telecom billing systems. Now I'm responsible for the billing systems of a major national telecom company with $10B in annual revenue. Funny how things go.

Always played with computers so no surprise I ended up in IT, but I still wish I had at least had the chance to go through the architecture program in university, doing design work and having the experience. Clearly wouldn't necessarily have impacted what I ended up doing for money.

As a child my career aspirations changed almost daily, but I was eager to learn many different things. As I got older I took a real interest in animal science and wanted to go into some field that pertained to it. I landed a job with a local large and small animal vet when I was in the 9th grade and stuck with it through HS. From my years there I had decided to become a vet. I really love working there and could see myself doing that. When I got into college, I had a change of heart, due to the amount of school time it would take, the money that would cost and the difficulty of the curriculum. I fell into the business school, because I had no idea what I wanted to do for a living, but I did want to be in college and party, so business seemed as good as any. I found a real interest in statistics and followed that through as my focus.

Now it was a long trip, and a somewhat confusing journey, but now I am in sales and I rep Carrier and Bryant brand HVAC equipment...crazy how the card fall huh!

I always wanted to build things, but I wanted a job that I didn't get completely covered in grease.

My father owned an auto parts store, and we had a small shop in the back for his own cars. He also raced vintage auto racing. When I was 10 or so I tore down my first 1600 VW, by time I was 12 I was building them. At 15 I restored a Triumph TR4 from the ground up. It was my first lesson in auto body work. So now in the back of dads shop I was fixing cars, and doing restorations. But I wasn't getting paid. So while in college learning I took a job at a body shop. This was probably my biggest mistake, yet my largest learning experience. The shop specialized in customs from bagged low riders to huge 10" lifted 4x4s. My boss was a huge a tweaker, and it didn't take long to fall in with him. Learned to lay wicked flames, pin stripe, fades, huge metal flake. Worked for him for about 2 years, until I was advised that I should quit. Boss had pissed off some pretty bad people. Left that, college drop out, spun out, looking for work. Landed a parts guy job at a local dealership, a job I could do blind folded being raised in it. Quit the parting, cleaned up, still here, still alive, still pushin parts at a dealership. Not the best paid, but I get to play with my bike and surf the web while at work, and I have sources for lots of parts for cheap. :)

When I was in grade school and years following, I wanted to be a columnist for Cycle World or Cycle so I could ride all the new bikes. Now at age 40, I'm an operator in a power plant and really enjoy it.

I've swapped a bunch of those off and on EMB 145's in the last year and a half. I previously did about six years at the (ex) United Airlines hanger in Indy. Know a couple of guys at Rolls up there too. Still don't know what I want to be when I grow up :).

When I was little I think I wanted to be an astronaut. When I got older I realized I was colorblind and could never be an astronaut or a military pilot. I was good at science and math so I got my masters degree in aerospace engineering. I focused mainly on aircraft, probably because my father is a pilot and I grew up around planes.....and I really like airplanes. Now I do structural analysis on parts for new aircraft designs. Basically I help design the parts so that they are just strong enough not to break and as lightweight as possible. I have mainly worked on military fighters and helicopters but have been working on business jets lately (currently designing parts for the fastest Honda in the world).

When I grow up, I want to design and build small airplanes in a workshop in my backyard. I don't get enough dirt under my nails sitting at a computer all day. That's probably why I'm building a bike instead of just buying one.

I'm currently a Computer Science student. One more semester till I graduate. I'll either be taking a job with a startup when I graduate or attempting to find a job in this crazy market. I intend to live frugally and invest until I'm 40 or so then retire and live off my investments, hopefully doing things I want to do.

I wanted to have my own custom car shop. :p

I now work on computers and fix peoples internet.

Small world. :)

As a kid I wanted to be a Fighter Pilot, have always loved planes, but in 3rd grade I started wearing glasses and found out it would never happen because of my vision.
Then in middle school I wanted to be a Marine Biologist... even attended a summer college course when I was a Fresman in High School.
Then I got grease under my nails when I took Vocational Auto Mechanics for the last 3 years of High school and went on to get an associates degree In Auto / Diesel Technology. I bent wrenches at GM and Ford Dealerships for 17 years. While doing that I joined the Air National Guard to be a Crew Chief on Fighter Jets as a "Weekend Warrior". Crewed F-4 and F-16's for a 6 year stint.
For the last 15 years now I've been the head of the Maintenance Department at a couple different Plastic Injection Molding Factories. Ran into an old buddy at a bar who offered me the job ;)
I still love the ocean, got a 180g aquarium along with 4 smaller 29 / 40 gallon ones.
And any time there is a car / bike show or race, or even a Fly-in thats in the area that I can get to, I make it there.

An Orthodontist when I was in middle school. When I got older, a Marine Biologist. When I got a little older still, I wanted to be a person who was not an employee. Still working on that one! Ha!

Then studied architecture until I found I loved the bench work, but hated the fact that everything was a matter of taste.
Became a manufacturing tool designer.
Then disabled.....

Now I just want to be independently wealthy, and able to follow my interests. 8)
