What she doesn't know won't hurt me...

Hoosier Daddy

Earache my eye...
'bout two weeks ago I painted my e-bay headers with high temp header paint and let them set. Then tonight I got off work and it was actually decent out... hmm good enough to open the windows in the kitchen and the wife was at work....

Fired up the oven and started curing some paint. 200 for 1/2 hour, outside for 1/2 hour, 375 for a 1/2 hour, then back outside for 1/2 hour, then finally 550 for 1/2 hour and outside till cool.
Pretty good smoke when I opened the oven the last time but a couple open windows, exhaust fan, and two of her smelly candles and all is good! Shit I even wiped out the oven with kitchen cleaner to be safe :D
Rates right up there with when I cleaned up my cylinder heads after degreasing...

You know women have those sooper noses, right?

You are so busted but she will wait and use it during a fight in like 20 years. ;D

yeah, your busted! I have tried every trick in the book! If she don't know right away, wait till she fire up the oven. She will smell cleaner or see its been cleaned. She knows you didn't just up and get a wild hair to clean the oven. If you did, you might want to take up figure skating!

Or ice dancing.

LOL, I finally just started admitting to my wife when I was going to do something stupid with household appliances or furniture. Last time I tried to sneak something, I was cleaning Gretta's motor in the bathtub in my boxer shorts. She took a picture and is currently holding it for blackmail. I am thinking of just blowing it up and hanging it in the living room to prove that I don't care.

I truly believe my wife when she tells me that men are terrible liars and will always be sniffed out.

But dammit, I still remember lefty loosey, righty tighty, so I still win some things!

oh no... i forgot that go lurks these forums...

games up guys... if one girl knows, they all know ;D ;D

except i'm the girl that'll do the exact same thing, so i have to keep it a secret, too ;)

no matter who you get with i doubt they would complain about you working on your bike :D :D

This is funny but in all seriousness It is not a good idea to use your real oven for baking parts in. the chemicals can kill you. Or in the long run give you cancer. But on a funny note about the fighting with the wife thing I was busy doing other things around the house and asked her to rake leaves she half volunteered she rakes half the yard i rake the other half. We get into a fight last weekend and she brings that shit up. I stop and just start laughing I said you know comedians make a living out of this shit. You ask a women do one thing and she holds it over your head forever.

Yea, you're right... she does have a super scence of smell and I will probably get quizzed next time she uses the oven... but I have learned not to lie, just makes it worse.... instead give her that confused look and say something like "Huh, didn't think it'd do THAT." ::)

Twisted and I baked my fuel tank in my oven to cure the paint. My wife did smell something "funny" but she never figured it out and I never volunteered. You ought to be fine. It's way too out there for the wife to believe... Women seem to think we're slightly smarter than we actually are in some areas and way dumber than we are in most others.

Well said! ya something about chemicals and food don't mix!

I hate to be the downer in here, cause I laughed really hard when I read all the posts, but using your kitchen appliances to bake on paint and other coatings is a really bad idea. Most of these chemicals are high temp so there is not way you are going to burn off the residue that ends up in your oven... couple that with fact that they are engineered to from crazy tight bonds with metal, and you have a film that no matter how hard you scrub and how much cleaner you use it will never come off.

I actually worked in a large national laboratory during college doing testing on many different chemical solutions for a host of chemical companies, and while I am bound by many confidentiality contacts and I really cant discuss the specifics, I can say this... We tested many household paints, automotive and aviation coatings as well and cleaning prepping solutions on household appliances. Mainly clothes dryers, ovens, toaster ovens and dishwashers. The results were inconclusive in our tests, but as someone who saw many of the results first hand, I wouldn't even think about doing this in someones oven I dislike, let alone my own family.

Again if this was a one time thing you will be fine, but please... everyone on here... I really mean this, don't make this a habit. Just go to CL and pick up a crappy $100 oven! Hell some people will give them to you, then you can set it up to only get garage duty. Trust me, it goes beyond smelling up the kitchen... that smell you smell every time you fire the oven up is the carcinogens and chemicals being released by heat... food in an oven absorbs heat and moisture and anything else that happens to be floating in the there.

Buzz kill...

Ok, Point well taken, never again... and to be honest I had heard this on powder-coatings, but thought this VHT paint that is rated for 1200-1500 degrees I would be safe in my measley little 550 degree oven, if I followed the instruction on the can that is. But I understand that the directions are simple for the paint, not intended to be in contact with food there after.

yeah pretty much... I apologize for killing it, I really did get a good kick out of it but I just wanted to make sure everyone knew that it really isn't a good idea... but these days with all the crap they put in our food, we are all gonna get Mad Cow and die anyway right?

I just think I saw you post a couple days ago... you have a beautiful family, once or twice isn't gonna kill anyone, but I would hate to see someone get sick from prolonged exposure. A lot of this stuff won't kill you but it can cause other complications that later down the road can be real risky.

On a lighter note, is being half naked in the tub with Gretta considered cheating? ;)
