How do you guys feel about painting wheels? Ive got chromed out wheels on my bike Im building and of course they are rust pitted, etc. plus I just want to black them out. Do you guys run any certain paint that will stick to that chrome? Its pretty rough, I primed a spot and it didnt chip very easily but after some heat and once it dries out Im afraid I might have problems. What do you all do here? Im an automotive painter so obviously thats what we have, I figured if I put a strong coat of fill primer on it, sand then base/clear it it might be okay. But wanted to ask if maybe you guys have a certain paint you use for that kind of stuff? Another thing, Im not unlacing..Im spraying the whole wheel/hub/spokes..Not because Im lazy but because I think it'll look cool the way Im doing it..Anyways, let me know if you guys have any options for me...Thanks a bunch!

American Racing Wheels used Sherwin Williams air dry enamel on the old white wagon spoke wheels popular with the 4x4 crowd in the 70s-80s. Seemed pretty durable. I'm not a big fan of painting the entire wheel, but I have seen some done that looked good.

Honestly, Rustoleum makes an applianceepoxy that comes in white, biscuit, almond, stainless, and black. It dries super hard... not quite powder hard, but close... the cans come in all colors but if you are using your own gun, i have only been able to find the white in the quart size... either way, this is your best bet... this stuff really rocks!

Thanks!

Paint wont sty on chrome very well even if you rough it up pretty good with 240~360 grit.
Sandblasting would be best as it leaves a real nice textured finish, but, it can get relatively expensive if your keeping costs down
Use self etching primer before undercoat

I shot my wheels with rustoleum hammered finish black. 2 years and its holding up good.

I have done this with great success before and am going to do it again with my current build. Reconsider unlacing the rims as it comes out Much better in the end. Scuff everything with 240 or harsher to get the primer to stick. Use self etching directly on the rim and High Build on top of that, wet sanding inbetween eash coat (2 self etch and at least 2 high builld). Rustoleum or Duplicolor Laquer paints work really well, just give them lots of curing time in a warm environment (even loger in cold) before relacing, truing and mounting tires. Clear Coat is your friend, use several coats.
