I need some tech help (not a style question)

Pros and Cons of these Wheels and Tire:

Bigger Tires

Thinner Tires

I am not interested in which is cooler looking but which are better at high speeds and for handling. Really just the difference and why one would choose one of the other. Rim size/Tire diameter

Thanks so much!

Can't say I have ever ridden anything with those big baloon tyres as in the top picture, but I would imagine the steering must be terribly slow......

Generally, a wider / taller tire will have a higher loading capacity (think touring bike) and will soak up smaller imperfections in pavement. The trade off is reduced handling capabilities - a lot of flex in those huge side walls.

The tires in the second pic are made for more sport-like handling. The load capacity is generally less (not usually a lot less though), but are able to transmit more feeling from the road surface to the rider.

As far as rim size / diameter goes, what question did you have in mind?

Thanks guys for the reply

BigRich - I am looking for better handling as I only have one handle and need top handling capabilities to compensate for the lack of control.

Run Stock OEM sizes in the best quality tire you can get Like Bridgestone Spitfires or Avons....Hve them fitted with quality new tubes and get them static balanced.

Wide tires make steering heavier and less precise. They can cause high speed wobbles even in a straight line.....

This was sent to me as a pm. I asked him to just post in here rather than pm

One hand? I really had no idea. I just thought it was a random-ish screen name........

What bike do you have again? Top quality tires really do make a huge difference, so look for reviews before buying. But the tires are only part of the handling equation - bearings, bushings, frame geometry, etc can all throw things out of whack quickly.

I have a 1972 CB450k. I have my arm up to just past the elbow, like a wrist. and palm but no fingers or thumb.

Be annoyed or not annoyed. It's fine by me.Get advice from people who know nothing....Get their advice...I get hundreds of "thank you Swivel" PM's.Not you I guess,I'm cool with that...

I shall post or PM where I choose.....And I choose not to PM you.....

I asked him to please post in the forum cause getting these pm's is a bit annoying(cause he has done it multiple times before)
What a twat.

Fail: the lack of understanding of what a personal message is.

Fail: the lack of understanding that posting personal message in a public forum is the equivalent of a grown man running to the teacher.

Fail: the very notion that I will not answer critizism in any away in some kind.

PM BigRich,...and Bich,..he loves me and my attitude.

Don't poke me with a stick,If you don't like my words don't read them or respond:simple

DONE.....PERIOD

Why does this guy want to try and bully people?

SHITHEAD - Ignore me and my posts. I don't want your info or help.

Ha! Now you see why he has been on my "ignore" list for so long..........

If I'm not mistaken, the 450's came with a 1.6" wide rim up front? I would definitely try to find a wider hoop to replace it - it will open up so many tire options. Aside from making sure everything I mentioned earlier is perfect (bearings, bushings, blah blah blah) and maybe adding a steering stabilizer, I can't help much else. I've never had to ride with one hand, so I can't imagine what it's like.

Thanks dude...

I appreciate your help.

I have had a number of motorcycles but I am trying to build one from the ground up with a basketcase I found for cheap.

As Big Rich says - those fat tyres (especially the front) would completely stuff the handling!

I'm not familiar with Hondas so I can't give any specific wheel/tyre size recommendations, but whatever way you go I would highly recommend a steering damper, tapered roller steering bearings, and a fork brace.

These will all help in getting precision steering.

Crazy

I have a 72 CB450, and run a 100/90-19 up front and currently a 120/80 out back. The 120 is too wide for the stock rim, but a 100 or even 110 might fit (side note, 4.00-18 fits awesome on the back wheel...thats what my dad runs). I run Bridgestone Battlax BT45's and i love them. They stick real well to the road. Hope this helps somewhat
