I just got hit with major sticker shock. trying to insure two of my bikes in CA is going to be $1900. previously in WA its was $800. Turns out all those ambulance chaser billboards I have been seeing play a factor on insurance rates here. I was using progressive, they have been good and seemingly the cheapest around....who do you guys use?
I use whoever is cheapest for the locale. In Philly, I got the best prices through Liberty Mutual when I worked at Temple University. After I left that job, I switched to Allstate because they insured my house and everything else, so the wheeled stuff was discounted. Here in Georgia, i'm with State Farm. Have you looked at Hagerty's? Vintage and custom stuff is there specialty, so I wonder if their rates are better.
min liability is 15/30 here which would still cost me $700 but I have been getting 100/300 because in the case im in an accident. i dont want to have some asshat lawyer come after my personal assets. Personal injury litigation is totally perverse here.
My Buell is insured with Progressive. Liability on the Buell in Atlanta was the same as full coverage in Arkansas @ $75.00 per year. My home built EVO chopper with Geico as it doesn't have an HD VIN Number. Liability only is currently $100 per year. Hagerty for my 79 Sportster is probably the best value. $140 per year full coverage with agreed on replacement value and no limits on riding.
I should also mention I'm quoting comprehensive and collison, not just liability. I learned the hard way a couple years ago when some homeless dude set my cherry KZ650 on fire and I got nothing.
For me, comprehensive insurance on my 1975 BMW R75/6 was pointless. They depreciate the value from 1975
Maybe I could get an appraisal and proper insurance on it, but it would end up costing a bit more I think.
In SC I'm inuring my 2010 BMW F800ST for $75 a year (Progressive). Liability only. My R75/6 costs about USD$450 per year for the same kind of coverage in Ontario. Full coverage wasn't much more.
What's strange is in Canada I have completely free health care, yet liability limits are $2,000,000. None of this $300,000 nonsense. Lots of rehab etc. is not necessarily covered by the government, but it sure made buying car insurance in SC confusing for me. I have no idea how much coverage I might actually want.
Progressive lets you put in an "agreed upon value" for bikes of a certain vintage. One of the bikes I'm insuring my KZ1000 so I put the value at $12,000. loosing that KZ650 stung, dont want a repeat of that without adequate compensation.

I have one "at fault accident" and a ticket so thats not helping me at all, they should fall off by the next time i buy insurance. After messing around with the variables i have settled on a rate of $1350 for the KTM and KZ on Progressive. that's for 100/300, no medical, $1000 deductible on comprehensive and collision. Thats still quite a bit more than I was paying. Whats funny is Washington didn't require insurance for motorcycles until recently, and I never had insurance for 10+ years. My kz650 loss is still fresh in my mind and I really don't want to be out in the cold if something happens again. Never did find the guy who did it despite numerous eye witnesses, and a series of arson in the area.
I am in CA - I previously had Progressive because their commercials always say they are the best rate. They wanted to charge me nearly $700 a MONTH for insurance of my motorcycle (this quote was when I told them I had a permit to ride, no license)
I called Gieco, and when they say 15 minutes could save you 15% or more... that's a LIE. it was more like 25 minutes and saved me WAY more than that. I pay 25$ a month for full coverage, OEM parts replacement, gear replacement, everything - on a classic bike modified, with no license and valued at $9000
I am 38 years old... if I was maybe 20, or 25 that might be quite different.
I need to shop around for the Scooter this season. Got my renewal and just liability is over $800 for the year. My goldwing is $325. My son is 15 and the reason it is high but that's too high. when it was just me it was $50 for the year.
Hmm, I use any insurance with a deductible. I'm not a rich person, and every penny counts. Insurance prices are really scary. A deductible helps me with all insurance services - auto, life, home. As sad as it is, most often insurance policies (car, or those required for traveling abroad) are purchased not because a person really wants to protect himself, but because the rules require it. Naturally, the cheaper such a policy is, the better for me. After all, if it were up to me, I wouldn't buy one at all. But I have no choice. Money Expert helps me save my money.
I ended up w/ Geico. On the R1150R, the house, the cages, & the 5th wheel. I thought that $99 a year, full coverage, for the BMW was pretty reasonable. (Also, I like the Gekko; he seems to be one of the few of his kind that doesn't seem to suffer from "Reptile Disfunction.")
As I ride a bike the probability of something happening to it is very high, so I always insure it. I had some problems with some insurance companies as they said that they will cover everything in case of accident, theft, etc. but in fact, when I had an accident I solved everything by myself as they weren't competent to do that. So now I am very attentive when choosing an insurance company, this is why I chose Simple BikeInsurance and they didn't disappoint me. When I had an accident they managed the whole situation very quickly and I was shocked by their professionalism.
I've got Esurance and my yearly is ~$1k for the 919. It was closer to $700 for my 81 CB900 if I remember correctly. (CA Bay Area) I've got comprehensive and collision after my SV1k got stolen w/ liability only and I never got a penny back. I remember Esurance being the cheapest major company around here when I looked a couple years ago. After getting in a 1.5 year debacle with a small insurance company a few years back I refuse to deal with them anymore.
