Wood Cafe Seat Build Video!

you should build a mold and make a glass part, it would save you about 13lbs...

Well that would kinda defeat the purpose of trying something different wouldn't it? At 155lbs I'm not too concerned about weight. Maybe I'll do a glass seat for my next bike after a get jacked in the gym this winter. ;D

fantastic job man, looks beautiful.

i've been wanting to do the same sort of thing for a few months now - your thread is actually the reason why i stumbled across this forum. i was searching around for wood seats on the internet and this came up.

i have no experience working with metal, but my wood working skills are good. its nice to see someone else has done it and not been laughed at. i'm thinking about chambering the seat in a sort of "stair" formation and then filling in the rest with bondo to save some weight. i've also toyed with the idea of using ebony as the base of the seat (above the seat pan) and clear coating that.

anyhow, great work and a cool little unique touch!!!

i'll post a response to this thread if i ever get around to this seat thing. probably sometime when the weather gets nice again.

Thanks a lot Wallis! That's cool how you found the forum, it's very easy to spend hours upon reading posts on here...great forum.
The stair cowling sounds like a great idea. An ebony seat pan would look cool as shit. I wanted to have some exposed wood somewhere on the seat, but didn't know how or where to blend it with the paint. I never thought of putting a piece under the seat cushion, I think that's what you mean.
My Dad actually first had mentioned a stair idea like that.. My original design was to have fins make up the back like my final design, but cut them as 1 inch arches and make sort of a storage space inside the cowling. Then a could drape over fiberglass to allow a full bondo surface. I was going to have a door with a latch that could open up from underneath. It was a good idea, but was so fucking involved it was stressing me out and I ended up bagging the whole concept. Anyway, I can't wait to see what you come up with!

Very nice job,,I;m thinkin there is some boat building experience there...A lot of times I have used the "Home Depot" spray foam...What kinda weight is it??

Thanks! The foam is a 2 part 8lb. I attempted the spray foam from HD first, but quickly realized it was not what I had in mind. It does not set hard enough for the strength I wanted. US Composites is the company I got it from. http://uscomposites.com/foam.html. pretty cool stuff. Never built a boat before, but it's on my bucket list for sure.

F-ing sweet! Looks great!!!!!! I love to see the way others make their vision materialize.

Hey Kev,

Just caught your seat man. Gotta say it looks killa, well done.

I'm still trying to finish mine........one day. Mine was always going to be a buck for laying glass over.

Cheers

Hey man! Thanks for the inspiration! Can't wait to see your seat all finished. I didn't know you were gonna glass yours, the bondo worked out great. I should have built up the foam a bit more, so I wouldn't have had to use so much bondo.

cheers

Here's where mine is at. Ready for some primer and spray putty.
