Ill put up some more pics later this evening. Thanks guys. It was surprisingly pretty simple after some trial and error. The real bitch is figuring out how I am going to make it hinge off. I don't want to go pulling bolts if I have to replace a fuse while riding.

Yeah, the base is poplar, the bump is rubberwood. Super light and strong, but also very tough to cut and sand. Should hold up well though. I'm finishing the final touches on it tomorrow with the upholstery and i will post up some more pictures.

I'll keep an eye out for the finished product. Would love to see some zoomed out shots of your whole bike with the seat of you've got them!

Unfortunately the man is keeping the down today. Got a ton of website updates to do for work, however I should be done with it by the end of the week. I'll get some high res pics up then.
Thanks,
Andrew

Forgive the bike being disassembled. Trying to work out some demons at the moment. Planning on using some thin underlayment wrapped with more roll and tuck to hide the small gap between the frame and the seat. I'll post up pics when I it's done. Been a learn as I go process.

This has some serious potential to be a total game changer. Maybe i'm just an uneducated dunce, but I've never seen a wood seat on a motorcycle, but it goes really well with the cafe style. I like it. Will definitely be following the build.

There are a couple of other wood seats I've seen on here and other places. I'm planning on making a "how to" thread when it's finished. Seriously, I know fiberglass is durable, but not all that pretty. Plus, it can't be shaped after the mold has set. I figured this was something different, and I enjoy woodworking almost as much as wrenching on the bike, so why not? Next I'm going to look into making one out of three or more pieces of different woods, to give a stripe effect. Taking notes from a buddy of mine that builds guitars. Here is a pic of what I'd like to emulate.

Talking about some serious cheddar to make something like this, but hell, there are worse things to throw money away on.

Ah ok. I figured I was being a bit overzealous in saying it was the only one. But, regardless, It's not like everyone and their brother has one, like they do with fiberglass. Don't get me wrong, fiberglass is a great option for making a custom seat being that it's cheap and relatively easy to work with. In all honesty, I'll probably be getting one for my bike, but for later bikes down the road, ones where I want it to REALLY be my own making, I'm going with the wood seat.

I definitely agree on enjoying woodworking. I've been making stuff from wood all my life. It's a rewarding hobby, or past time I suppose. Combine wood with motorcycles and you've got a match made in heaven. Dude. That pin-striping will be sick. Expensive, but so sick. Do you have a bike you want to put that on, or just thinking forwards?

You'll have to let me know when you post that "How to". I may not catch it in the tons of other threads on here. Still can't believe more people haven't done this.

Hey! cool Idea man. I have been practicing a woodgrain painting technique, (used mostly for hot rod and vintage auto application).you just gave me a sweeet idea!!

Finished Product

Wow man, I saw your vid on the first one a while back and i really loved it. This one looks beautiful. I love the dark stain on it. Any plans on making one that a battery can fit under?

Thanks guys. Purely from an aesthetic and functional standpoint, I actually prefer to leave the battery in place. I like the look of the breather box covers as well. Makes the bike look more stout in my opinion. Plus, rewiring is not my favorite thing. Maybe down the road though. Next one will be multi-peice with more exposed wood. Maybe oil rubbed instead of stained.
BTW, the video you're talking about wasn't me. That was a really nice looking build though.
