WTB CB 175 Head

Coast to Coast
Hey guys,
One of the spark plug ports on cb175 is in dire need of repair. The threads are barely hanging in there. Well a local shop took a look and said it would be about $300 to repair it. Rather than throw $300 at it I would rather just buy another head and swap it out.

Anybody have a head in decent condition they are willing to part with for cheap?
Let me know. Thanks

Funny you bring this up - I was digging around in the garage last week and found a head from a vertical 175. I'll check the condition of it in a day or two, but if it's any good I'll sell it cheap.

You used to be able to get helicoil spark plug thread repair kits for about $18.00 from most auto supply and some small engine places. Your machine shop must really like reaming you or they figure they're worth 275 bucks an hour.

As a follow up to my earlier rant, here's a listing from ebay.com I just copied. I'm not a shill for these guys, just providing information.

The little kits that I used to get only had 2 helicoils - this kit has 10, which is probably 5 times as many as you'll ever need. Even with the cost of the kit and the shipping, probably saves your well over $200.00 from your machinist's quote.

Pacomotor,

Thanks a bunch for your help. I had this done to my cb350 a while back and the shop only charged my like 30 minutes of labor. I will have to call around.

Hey guys,

I am thinking about going the helicoil route. How do I know what "size" to get? Any tips would be super helpful too. Thanks

Re: WTB CB 175 Head or should I helicoil it

So I have been having the worst luck trying to find a 12mm helicoil kit locally.

Seems like everyone only carries 14mm. Which unless I am blind or just confused the D8HA spark plug for cb175's is 12mm with a 1/2 reach. I am assuming this is the size helicoil I need. ????
