XR600R "ran when parked"

Coast to Coast
Ok, so I picked this up the other day at $100 because it seemed like a deal. It is a classic "ran when parked, but won't turn over now" deal. Supposedly left out for a couple days with no spark plug.

First thing I noticed is a broken shift shaft, then I went to pull the top end off. Pull the head cover and SURPRISE! No rockers and a wiped cam lobe. Valves are iffy, not cupped but worn very thin on the edges.

Cylinder was FULL of some blue colored liquid that smelled like a cross between gas and penetrating oil. Luckily the oil drained out was clean and nothing made it past the piston rings. With the cylinder off it has .004" taper and plenty of rust. The little end of the rod is also scored and out of spec with .003-.004" clearance due to being out of round.

All in all it looks like the engine will cost about $800 to bring back.

Lol
Well the shop manual arrived so bottom end tear down has started. The bottom end looks surprisingly good. Clutch basket is nice and clean with no notches, everything moves smoothly, just suprisingly nice after the top end. I haven't split the cases yet so there might be some wear in the tranamission, but I'll find out.

Well out of the 3 flywheel pullers I have none fit this one. So in stuck waiting on a puller. But once I have that I can split the cases. That'll let me get the crank apart to replace the rod and replace the broken shift shaft.

Well let this serve as a warning to you guys. I ran the VIN of this bike through cyclevin, NICB and sent a request in to the state to make sure it was clear. Well aparently if it isn't being investigated anymore the only people that can tell you it was stolen are the cops. I took it to the stats patrol for a vin inspection so that I could get it registered and found out it had been stolen in 2014. But because the police had given up looking for it it wouldn't show up on any VIN check except theirs. So there is a chance I could get it back, but nothing will be known until a detective gets around to looking at it.

Rather angry that the VIN check places don't keep a theft report on the record permanently, annoyed that the state didn't say it had been stolen when I sent an ownership request, and mostly disappointed because I was looking forward to building it.

With it being stolen in 2014 who knows how many hands it passed through before ending up with me. I did show them the ad for it from offerup, so that guy will probably be asked where he got it and whoever originally stole it is probably long forgotten.

Pretty much. Lesson learned is get the VIN and just call the police station and ask if they can run it. Aparently that is the only way to be sure.

Lol, I'm kinda done buying bikes for now. Titled ones are out of my price range and I'm just not willing to deal with the hassle of no title again for a long time.
