xs tank

I am wanting to mount an 77 XS 750 tank on my 77 XS 650 Yamaha. The XS 650 had rubber bumpers on the tank that slid into grooves on the frame. The XS 750 had just the opposite with bumpers on the frame and grooves on the tank. So, I now have a XS 750 tank with grooves and a XS 650 frame with grooves also. Has anyone made this type of conversion and if so can you give me the details. The look I'm after can be seen on Ebay bike #320130882573. I would also like suggestion on how you would run the seam down the middle of the tank that is seen on that bike. That guy did an awesome job.

That tank does not look like a stock tx750. It is possible it is an xs750 that has been modified for some reason. If you want to use the xs750 tank, remove the existing supports and weld in 2 pieces to support the rubber mounts. If you don,t have the rubber mounts, i may be able to help. I would have to check first, but they are quite common on ebay. Doug

Thanks for the quick response to my question. I agree that tank looks to me like an XS 750 tank. Can you clarify as to which should have the rubber bumpers welded in place? Should I remove the slots on the stock XS 750 tank and add the bumpers or should I remove the slots on the XS 650 frame and weld the bumpers in place there?

Sorry, my reply was not that clear. Remove the supports from your frame, then you can weld supports for the 750 tank.
You can use the rubber supports to determine what is needed and where it should be welded. The 750 tank is also mounted on a rubber pad at the rear. If more info is required, just ask, Doug

Thanks again. I also am wondering about that bead or seam that runs down the middle of the tank. It looks like it starts right behind the gas cap all the way back to the front of the seat. I have a 77 XS 750 tank that I am going to use on this project and they didn't come with that seam down the middle. I want to build a similiar bike such as this. What do you think that seam is made of and how was it attached to the tank? Where can I get some tank knee pads like those or similiar? What about the rear mount of the 750 tank? It does have a mount similiar to the 650 that secures the rear of the tank but the support on the tank isn't horizonal like the 650 tank. Whats the best way to modify that support? Lots of questions.

Hi, the front of the tank is supported either side by a metal spigot approx. 40mm long with a 10mm dia. A plastic filler and a rubber mount slides over the spigot. The tank is the slid forward over these. The rear has a plate with a nut welded underneath and a short tube on top, a rubber damper sits on top of this plate. A bolt is then used to attach the tank, through the tube and into the nut at the bottom. Hopefully you can visualize this when you look at the tank. If you look at Tims frame where he welded in a plate to attach the rear of his tank, you may see a clearer picture, Doug ???

You can also drill a hole through the frame bracing and use a bolt to mount the gas tank rubbers if you don't want to weld. I'm goin to add the same tank to my XS build in a couple of weeks. Does anybody know of a replacement gas cap I can use that doesn't have the key lock? I'm building a track bike and it will be inconvenient to have to unlock the gas cap every pit stop.....

Post some pics if you can of the mounting. I would like to see how this was mounted. Also the seam he ran down the middle of the tank and the tank rubbers really give the bike the vintage look. I would like to know how he did the raised seam or bead down the middle of the tank. I have asked that question on several other forums and I can't get anyone to even take a stab at that question.

cut the cups off your frame, place the tank on the frame and then slide in the rubbers. Hold the rubbers while a buddy pulls the tank back off. Mark the rubbers and then drill hole through frame gusset. Throw some threaded rod and a nut on each end countersunk into the rubbers and your good. The rear tab just needs to be bent into position, this can be done by hand. This is how I mounted my xs750 tank on my xs650 and it hasn't moved since....

Thanks for the info. I have not removed the tank mounts yet on my XS 650 frame to ready it for the XS 750 tank. I have began to straighten the rear mounting tang on the XS 750 tank to a more horizonal postion so it will fit the rear mounting post on the XS 650 frame and just set the tank in place to eyeball the fit. I have noticed as I look at the underside of the XS 750 tank as it sets on my frame that there is going to be an area on the underside of the XS 750 tank that will be making contact with my frame and preventing the tank from coming any further down. Has anyone else ran into this when mounting this tank? Did you need to relieve this area and if so what is the method? Rubber hammer?

If you look at mine, it's pointing uphill alittle and drives me friggin nuts.....I have been wondering the same thing...I'm low budget and if I could afford to have the tank re-worked I probably would've gone with a different tank anyway!! I thought of shimming the tail end up a little but haven't tried it yet.....Anyone else???

Thanks again Nate. I would have thought this was a pretty common modification as I have seen more then a few XS 650's wearing a XS 750 tank. However, from the few responses I am seeing maybe not so many have tried this tank.
