Yeah, its good to hear that at least no-one got hurt. On the 'giving people a ride' part, I'll generally only let a mate whos got his own bike have a ride of mine. You know that they're on the right track as far as bike respect goes, and they'll often back it up with an offer to have a shot on theirs. So far I've had a ride of a mates '94 Ducati 600SS, and another has offered his Kawasaki ZX-6 up for a spin. Gives you some good perspective on bikes, too.
Well, fire season came to an abrupt end, so I finally had a chance to finish the bike. After the accident a couple months ago, she's got new rearsets, new mini tach/speedo, new grips, and best of all, a completely new exhaust. The exhaust wasn't the result of the wreck though. I was on my way back from Redding and noticed the exhaust note got a lot louder and she started backfiring a lot. Pulled over and saw that the right pipe had split all the way around a couple inches down from the head. When I got back home I tore the exhaust open and found that the previous owner had made several cuts to the pipes, bent a more severe angle coming out of the heads, and welded them back together. Hmmm. So I went out and bought some steel tubing and bent/welded together a new exhaust. Pretty pleased that I managed to pull it off. Anyways, she's looking nice and running even better, and I'm happy as a clam.
Re: XS400 Green Bastard - slew of new parts, and ... done.
Looks good. I really like this bike. I would drill those rotors out. IMO it looks better and make the bike look lighter. Even without them being drilled the bike looks great. Well done.
Re: XS400 Green Bastard - slew of new parts, and ... done.
Hey,
I recently got an 81 xs 400 with the 16inch rear wheel with drum brake and wondered if you had any clearance issues (swingarm and shocks) with the xs750 rear wheel setup.
Re: XS400 Green Bastard - slew of new parts, and ... done.
at7- The larger wheel necessitates larger shocks of course. (for my purpose at lease, to clear the cowl) The tire has 1/4-1/2" clearance on either side with the swingarm, and about 3/8" with the chain. Rear tire is 110 90 18.
Re: XS400 Green Bastard - slew of new parts, and ... done.
nice bike, thanks for the reply. really like that tank style as well. I may have to fab some points to mount the caliper bracket since mines drum not sure will look tonite. should have the carbs back on her tomorrow hoping she runs out ok, havent ridden her yet. bought as a winter project should be a fun one.
Re: XS400 Green Bastard - slew of new parts, and ... done.
Thanks David. You'll also have to rig up a rear master cylinder if you're set on a rear disc brake. It can be kind of a pita, and honestly, on my next build, I plan to keep the rear drum. The performance gain from a disc setup isn't worth the headache, in my opinion. Plus, I'd prefer to NOT be able to lock up the rear in a panic. Just doesn't seem necessary on these old bikes.
Joe- Thanks. The tank is a stock xs750 tank. They came with knee dents from the factory.
