XS400 monoshock (yz125 swingarm)

Hi all!

Im from the good old PNW, just north of vancouver WA. Ive got two bikes currently, a cb360 thats torn down into boxes and the motors getting a good going through on the bench right now and then an 81 xs400 which is the subject of this experiment!
Ive lurked and lurked and lurked forever and done plenty to my bikes in that time but I never thought any of it was really worthy of its own thread on here! Conversions for the XS400 seem few and far between, or well any documenting for them at least.

So the general plan is to take a basically stock running xs400 and turn it into a dual sport dirt tracker! There have been minor aesthetic changes to the bike (dirt bars, mirrors, turn signals, seat) and ive only really delved into the engine to get her running (cleaned and rough synced carbs, shims on the needles, new air filters, valve adjustment).

SO a little background on this idea! I live pretty far out side the city where forest access roads are much closer (and really much more fun) than the highway. I dont have a dirtbike and didnt really feel like buying one right now. I figured I would just turn my xs400 thats just sitting around not running right into a nice little dirt-to-street bike. The plan is to remove the existing swingarm, rear wheel and battery box from the bike. Once the frames cleaned up I can start to mock up the YZ125 swingarm and figure out where the monoshock mount needs to be on the xs400's frame to give good travel and avoid binding. Probably going to end up having the mount just below the gas tanks mounting bolt, or just under where the 3 tubes of the upper frame converge. Currently on order from ebay are: (all parts are off a yz125 1998) swingarm, linkage, monoshock, and bearing kit. Im going to go to the yamaha store today and get the pivot arm bolts ordered.

As far as numbers go I know what I have read about other peoples attempts on the xs650 site and a few others, but until my parts get here I cant get any hard data (giggity). I do know an xs400 swingarm fits into an xs650 frame and vice versa. A 1998 YZ125 swingarm fits into a xs650 frame as well, might need a small amount removed off either side of the swingarm. Biggest problem will be that the yz125 pivot bolt is shorter (get two, weld into one) than the xs400's and that the pivot bolt mount on the xs400 has a bigger ID so the pivot bolt from the YZ125 has play in it. Im thinking that a machined sleeve with the ID of the YZ125 pivot bolt/bearings and the OD to fit in the XS400 frame will do the trick but again, cant do anything till the parts arrive.

I think the stock exhaust looks horrible and I really hate the fact that it has a joint in it. Seeing as its going to interfere with riding anyway im going to just build some custom one off headers and pipes. In my head its a two into one on the right side that sits high with a yoshimura can.

In short the end product will be an '81 xs400 with a dirtbike rear and monoshock.

Majority of the parts are ordered! First pivot bolt arrived, looks like itll be pretty easy to chop 2 of them and weld back together for the length.

cool man not sure if you've seen millennium falcons build but he does something similar

def an awesome idea makes me want to do one

Got all my parts in! My two pivot bolts are currently getting welded together (now I can blame someone else when it snaps! ;D) so tomorrow I should be able to see how much play there is around the finished bolt.

Millennium Falcon: Your build has been a HUGE help and and HUGE inspiration for me! I came across your build on the xs400 site I think it was and spent the entire evening reading over it all! So many good ideas and good work done there! Dont be suprised if you get a couple PM's from me over the course of this ;D

I took a bunch of pictures last night cutting out the rear section of the frame but they all turned out really horrible in the lighting, ill take some more today and get em up!

Glad to help. My bike was built by inspiration too. Feel free to pester me if you have questions......post some pictures of your progress. Keep up the good work. -MF

Looking forward to seeing this progress. MF has been a huge help in my build and the bikes he built are absolutely amazing.

Using screwdrivers as a temporary pivot bolt ;D I was really hoping that I would get the bolt back by today seeing as I leave for california for 4 days tomorrow.

Going to order some DOM tubing this weekend so I can start building the new subframe. Been pouring over Millenium Falcons build thread and im pretty sure I learn something new each time I read it! The one off mount for the brake lever for example.

As far as the actual design of the subframe/seat im torn between doing a tressil style structure or just a pair of supports. (two really quickly drawn out ideas supplied!) I think with how the mock up is looking the monoshock with mount just behind where the gas tank bolts in at. I need to fabricate a pair of brackets for the swingarm linkages connecting arm to bolt to.

More pics to follow when I get more organized!

FINALLY got more stuff! Wheel got here, pivot bolt TIG'd together for the proper length, DOM 1" steel tube got here for the seat, and I pulled the motor out this morning to give myself some more working room when the welding starts.

As far as the seat goes im still really undecided about how to style it. I love the look of all the NX650 customs out there. I want to be able to double up so its gotta be long enough for that while retaining strength. I think im going to get two 180 degree loops made and build the actual seat base as a long oval with a upwards bend in the rear hoop.

ALSO anybody got any suggestions are far as a different tank? The stock xs400 tank is HUGE and ugly as all hell and really has no place being on a bike thats going off-road. Its only the mounting bracket for the stock tank that is getting in the way so I think I could just chop that off. Maybe make a nice H-harness outta some beefy looking canvas and just keep the tank down that way? Could make it all nice and military looking.

What do you guys think so far? Im atrocious a posting I know, but now that stuff is showing up I have things to do so ill get more posts up much more frequently! Gimme any suggestions you want!
