xs650 to 750 big bore kit..??

That's very good to know! That's pretty much how I feel.. Though it may be because I ride with a V-Rod and a 1600cc Victory and a dude on a GSXR 600.. Amongst other Harley riders.. Haha. I have the smallest displacement out of most of them. Not to mention the oldest engine.

I'll have to check the timing chain, though, I think it's okay.
I'm just really looking forward to more power!

Did you get all your stuff on MikesXS.com?

Ross, yes I did get all my stuff from Mikes XS.
Do yourself this favor, spend the extra $32 for a NEW timing chain, mine looked good as well when I pulled it out, Almost new even though it was 38 years old. There are a few ways to check it.
Place the chain on a board and stretch it out all the way with the holes that go on the sproket down.
Then strighten the board vertically and the chain should have a nice gradual drop.

This is a good chain.

And this is the chain that is worn,

and no, it is not on it's not laying on the side links. that's how worn the chain was. They wear at the links causing them to be stretched. When I compared mine to the new one it was almost 1 1/2 link lenght extra long.

There are a few things you will need when you do your pistons, and that is a new chain guide, and a new chain at least. You can re use your stock valves, just get a valve job when you take your head in to the machine chop. You will need a cam chain riveter as well. It sounds intimidaing, but if i can do it, then anyone can.

Wow, Thanks for that. I guess that doesn't surprise me since it's over 35 years old!
I guess an extra $32 wont hurt too much.

I'm noticing though, on Mikesxs.com, they are saying the 2nd over pistons and the rings sets don't fit the '73.
Seems to me that it shouldn't matter since I'm getting it bored out for those pistons.. Am I right?? Haha. It's making me crazy.

Hah.. Just noticed I didn't scroll down on the page. Doh! Looks like I have some saving up to do!

Thanks for the info Drgonzo!

Yeah, Ross, you need Part #05-0652.
I know they are a prety penny. Between, a gasket set, a seal set, and little bits here and there and that cam chain tool, you'll easily spend a good $400 to $600 depending, but you may spend as little as $300 in parts and then another $100 or so in machine work.

I was doing the math.. And minus the tool, plus the labor, I may be sitting at about $450.
Which is still cheaper than the $650+ for the big bore kit.. Granted, I'm not getting as many CCs out of it.
Still saving $$$. ;D

Hopefully I can find a way to get that cam chain on without buying the tool.. Cause I honestly can't see myself using that tool more than once. Maybe they can do that at the shop while they bore it out.

P.s. Xulf, if you have a link to some of your builds.. I want to see 'em! Especially the TX.

Ross, Let me first update mine since it has been a little while (about a year) I never posted any of my engine work etc.
Also, The chain is the last thing that has to be done before putting the top cover on, so the machine chop won't be able to rivet it.
Where do you live by the way? What state?
Here is my build thread. I'll start updating it now, by adding photos and what not.

................................................................and that cam chain tool,

Ognore service manual, loosen valve adjusters, remove top cover and slide bearings off both ends of cam.
I've never split an XS650 chain to get top end off

It says on XS650direct.com that the cam chain is the proper size, you might just have to lever it over the last tooth, would never occur to me to split it. Or you can just do that Crazypj says. Almost looking forward to doing my rebuild this winter, having too much fun riding it to start though!

Service manual tells you to split chain and rivet it back together.
You cant fit an endless chain as it passes through cam chain tensioner (I still find it easier to remove pivot pin than rivet chain)

I hear ya Pro! I'm still a few months away from this project.. So for now, I ride!

Thanks for the words of wisdom! I'm hoping the cam chain isn't too much of a challenge.
Honestly I haven't taken my top end apart yet, so until I do, I won't really know what I'm looking for, lol.

Ross, if you need any help let me know I've rebuilt a few 650's and am doing a rephase on another one this winter. The cam chain is no big deal, it just requires patience and a little foresight.

Montessa is right. The only reason I sugested on replacing the chain is because it is good measure and it is likely stretch and or worn out.
Ross, when you're ready, pm me your address and I'll mail you my chain riveting tool. Just return it when you're done.

Eddie

Wow, Xulf! Thanks so much for that offer! I might just have to take you up on that when the weather turns for the worse!
Getting ready to start purchasing the pieces soon.

Montessa, it's good to know there are so many fellow XS/TX riders out there!

Not a problem Ross. You will soon see that others here are even more generous than me. There are a whole bunch of members here that will take the shirt off their back if you needed it. I'm just glad to be able to help. Just let me know when you're ready. During the rebuild, I'll give you a few tips and pointer to look out for while you have the top end off.
