xs750 wont start..

So i recently purchased an XS750 and it was alittle tricky to start but I could get it done. Mind you, the electric starter does not work and I have to kickstart the engine. So yesterday I was driving down the highway and started to lose power and I ran out of gas. Filled it back up but now for the life of me I cant get the bike to start. The kickstarter isnt seized and there is resistance in the kickerstarter so its not loose or broken, but it just wont fire up. I was going to check the sparkplugs when I get back home today but in the mean time are there any other ideas on what I could do to narrow down the problem? Thanks.

since the bike was running, set the petcock on prime and put full choke and try to start. if it persist check fr fouled spark plugs and a spark. tank might be dirty and the last sip of gas sucked up and clogged your petcock/fuel line or worse your carbs
go from there.

Thanks ill give both a shot. I think you may be onto something with the battery idea too.

try to jump start it with the car battery.

CAR OFF, Bike battery disconnected.

jump start bike from car battery with jump leads

Bought new plugs and the sparkplugs won't spark after cranking the kickstart. The old plugs also reeked of gasoline. Judging by that and the gauge cluster severely dimming after multiple kickstart attempts I'm almost positive it's the battery. Also tried push starting it and it started for about 5 seconds then died. Anyways I'll get jumper cables tomorrow and give an update . any suggestions on batteries?

Cheap one at Harbor Freight is like five bucks. If you're going to ride a vintage bike it's a toolkit must-have.

cool thanks, I went ahead and bought one while at lunch. The guy I puchased the bike from said he bought a new battery not too long ago, could there be something that is draining the battery? If so any ideas on where I should start looking?

I went through major charging issues on my xs850. I ended up running Dr Doug's rectifier regulator mod to accomidate the ballistic parts battery.

What kind of battery do you have?

Look in the electrical section; Sonreir put together a great charging system testing how to.
