Nice! cool to see some illustrations on your plans. that gauge bracket looks great and will be a cool modern style touch

Thanks, Although I've changed the design of the panel somewhat. this one is easier to fabricate.

And I don't know where my head was yesterday, so I had to strip of the fiberglass I put on and do it again today, this time I did it the correct way.

Re: Yamaha XJ550 -1982

Mr.B,
Here is a bike I recently picked up. I think it represent what you are doing.
I really like your gauge upgrade idea.
Later,

Re: Yamaha XJ550 -1982

Thank you guys!

lsr490 : I gave you a comment over at xjbikes.com, you've got a really sweet 550 there :)

Some of my orders got delivered yesterday, new pegs and mirrors, The pegs are for an XJ600 so my mounts will need a little modifying to work, and I will need the springs from a xj600 to get it to work properly.

Re: Yamaha XJ550 -1982

Okey, update.
Still no garage..

Got some stuff, new rear dampeners with springs, and some new springs for the forks from Progressive :

And I can really recommend JC Motors (http://www.jcmotors.com/), they have excellent service!

And I got the panel cut in 5mm aluminum :

There's some tinkering left, and then it's gonna get anodized in black.

I also left my front fender for sandblasting (to remove the major amount of rust on the inside and the chrome on the outside)
also cleaned up and painted the inside of the headlight bucket since it had some minor rust issues.
And tried to repair a small dent on the bucket, managed quite well if I may say so myself giving the tools I had to work with.

Yeah it looks nice as is, but I figured since almost everything else (handlebar, controls, ignition etc) is black then I figured that the panel will look a little bit out of place.
Plus some extra protection from the anodizing can't hurt ;)

How's the 600 coming along? (street-ready in April? :D )

Re: Yamaha XJ550 -1982 (The Buttered Bagpiper)

Well, alot of other things... like building Lego Star Wars since ha just had birthday (the son in the house)
Well, the seat is painted and dressed just waiting for cover in fake leather. Did last pieces on the gastank and welded, but run out of gas :(
Have bought epoxiground to frame and all other parts... now I need to figure where to paint the bike :) Not sure the other guys in garage would like white paint on theirs :)
Will probably wait for a friend who also need to paint, and build a tent inside garage :)
Yes, IT WILL BE in the streets 1rst of April :)

Re: Yamaha XJ550 -1982 (The Buttered Bagpiper)

Got tired of looking for a garage, so I stole a part of my parents garage, Not much space left since my moms car is in there and my fathers Honda Shadow.. And my brothers and fathers project-moped..

So moved in my toolbox and starting stripping the bike, de-tabbing and cutting the rear-end off.

Now I need to loan a MIG-Welder and attach the rear hoop so I can start on the seat!

Re: Yamaha XJ550 -1982 (The Buttered Bagpiper)

This is awesome. I can't wait to see the finished bike. I used to work with a couple fellows from Sweden. I't was at a Volvo repair shop. Funny guys, super nice too. I hear it is a beautiful country.

Re: Yamaha XJ550 -1982 (Zefram Cochrane)

Yeah, can't complain, Sweden is beautiful, Cold but beautiful :D

Mounted the tank and headlight bucket just to set my mind right, Also tried the 6$ mirrors on one side.

One thing I noticed is.. I can't go with the slim design line I first thought off. I'm keeping the side covers so I have to make the seat quite wide over the covers and then make it thinner as it goes back. Hopefully I can pull that off without it looking weird.

Re: Yamaha XJ550 -1982 (Zefram Cochrane)

Re-shaped the levers with a angle grinder from this :

To this :

Will, probably, anodize the levers together with the dash.
I personal think it got a more stylish look, agree?

Re: Yamaha XJ550 -1982 (Zefram Cochrane)

Made some slight progress,

The rear hoop is cut to size and welded on.

And with some child-labor (well teenage-labor) from the local school that had the equipment to make a simple PCB-board I got this :

circuit1.jpg

Now I'm just waiting for the LEDs and Resistors to solder it all in place then it's time to finally send it to be anodized!
And tomorrow I will start with the fun part, making the new seat!

Re: Yamaha XJ550 -1982 (Zefram Cochrane)

Okey, quick-update, three months to go!

Seat is taking shape, Input is most welcome! Especially the height of the hump, to high?

Have put some more work on it after these photos were taken, mostly on the rear end of it though.

Also, started to solder the pcb-board, but noob as I am it didn't turn out especially professional, but it works, mostly :D
Maybe I'll get the panel and levers back from anodizing tomorrow, will be fun to see how they turned out!

Re: Yamaha XJ550 -1982 (Zefram Cochrane)

Re: Yamaha XJ550 -1982 (Zefram Cochrane)
