Yamaha XS900 Cafe Project "SHAFTY"

Re: new project yam xs850

ok so im thinking of ditching the starter motor and just running the kickstart alone.
would i be able to ditch the battery too seeing as it wouldent have a starter to turn or would i still need a small one?
thanks for the help!

Re: new project yam xs850

You will still need a small battery. If I remember correctly 3Ah is too small and the ideal one would be around 7Ah. Do a search on the yam triples site. There are more than a few posts with good info there.

Re: new project yam xs850

so dropped some stuff off to the powdercoaters this morning and some other stuff off to be blasted , should get it back on friday...

reassembled my calipers , which look good, stainless pistons are in the front ones.

swingarm bearings turned up today.
DSCF0744.jpg

took one of the old races out of the swingarm (still got the blind hole to do, not looking forward to that.

welded the foot on my side stand and burnt my finger in the process, blood sweat and tears (mostly mine) goes into these bikes folks....

took the lower head race out of the frame, had to weld a bolt across it so i had something to hit against, worked though....

does anyone know what this tab is for? , thought it was ground mount so left it be until i work out what its for.

DSCF0735.jpg

That tab with the screw in it is for the rear brake switch. You need it if you plan on keeping the rear master cylinder.

That is a great idea on the lower bearing race. I used a long, narrow screwdriver with a slight bend to beat it out. Took a while but got it done.

You'll finish your build before I finish mine. Don't slow down. Everything looks great.

Re: new project yam xs850

ill be using a different master cylinder so that can be cut off too...

Re: new project yam xs850

petrol tank turned up today, deffo going to use this one as it suits the bike much better , even has some slight "cafe" style knee dents.

ill drop it off for blasting on friday with some other parts.

finally took the blind race out the swingarm, welded a bolt across it and yanked it out with me slide hammer while it was still warm.

DSCF0745.jpg

oh and rear wheel bearings came today too, gonna fit em in a bit.

Re: new project yam xs850

so onwards and upwards, went to collect parts from powdercoater this morning

this is what ive got.

DSCF0766.jpg

DSCF0774.jpg

DSCF0772.jpg

DSCF0768.jpg

had trouble with top yoke and right hand side caliper mount, top yoke there is more air in it than alloy so is bubbling like a bugger. so is going to redo them both.

dropped off my petrol tank for blasting and primering, then i can see if it needs a bit of filler.

walked to halfords 2nite to pick up a fibreglass kit for my seat unit.
2thumbs

oh and fitted new rear wheel seal as wemoto couldent supply one, good old ebay.

Re: new project yam xs850

so today i got my fibreglass kit out and reinforced the seat.

took all the old foam off the previous owner had glued on with carpet glue
DSCF0776.jpg

then put x3 layers of matting on the flat base and x2 on the rear cone,
havent worked with fibreglass for a few years, forgot how hot it got!
DSCF0784.jpg

makes it heavier but its alot stiffer.
dont want it to crack under my fat arse.

top still needs lots of work , i need to make a base for the foam to go on so i can wrap it in leather
;)

Re: new project yam xs850

went to work today to weld the loop in the back of my frame,
Photo0003.jpg

found some tubing to slot into the loop, then pushed it into the back of the frame.
Photo0004.jpg

left a gap for the weld to go.

Photo0005.jpg

looks pretty good im happy with the way it came out
Photo0006.jpg

got it home and tried the seat unit on, plenty of space to mount a batery tray.
DSCF0786.jpg

what do we think of these braces for the frame, made them before i buggered my finger, was going to tack them in place but am unsure about them now?

Re: new project yam xs850

got the tank back today.

been blasted and primered, can now see the dents in it more clearly.

will be filling them at the weekend.
DSCF0803.jpg

DSCF0806.jpg

top yoke came back too, looks much better than the last time!
bought an original ace cafe token to bond to the top yoke bolt, looks nice i think.
DSCF0808.jpg

and the right hand caliper mount came back too

DSCF0810.jpg

sent my fork legs away for polishing ,so once they come back can rebuild the front end.

Re: new project yam xs850

welded in the battery tray and seat mounts today, it all went smoothly but just takes ages to cut and file the steel with only one good hand.

DSCF0813.jpg

seat will be mounted on rubber blocks to stop the fibreglass cracking.

started to fill the dents in the tank this morning, rubbed it down and put some primer over the filler, still needs loads more work yet.
DSCF0815.jpg

DSCF0816.jpg

need to cut down the sides of the seat unit to match the bottom of the tank.
DSCF0817.jpg

what do we think to these frame braces? weld them in or leave the frame as its is , opinions please?
DSCF0788.jpg

Re: new project yam xs850

is anybody out there?

well braces are all welded in, disk bolts turned up along with tabs so put my front disks on.
front wheel has new bearings and seals so jobs a good un, just need to buy a front tyre.
might buy them separately as not sure how much money i have left at the mo.
