1945 Walker Turner Radial Arm Drill Press Restoration

Sorry for that lack of updates over the last two months, but there were a few hiccups that limited my time to get in the shop and continue working on the drill press. But Over the last week I did get two final coats of paint on the drill and it is looking sharp! I hope that in a week or two I can get back in and start cleaning up the excess paint on pieces and maybe start assembly.

Put a couple of hours of work into assembling the drill press today, I got about as far as I planned (getting the ram on) Amazing thing is so far after dragging this project out for 3X longer than I expected to I haven't lost any parts yet! After cleaning up some stray paint drips on the machined surfaces and giving the small parts a quick wire brushing it is all going together extremely smoothly. I got the column buffed up the best I could considering there was some deep discoloring before. My hope that within the week this project will be complete or close to it!

Dude. This thing is sweet. I did a '39 hardinge lathe so I know how much more work this is than it initially seems. Well done sir.

Thank you! I watched your Hardinge project and you did a great job on that one! It turned out looking beautiful. For now my 12X36 Atlas lathe does what I need it to do in my very limited work space but within the next few years when I can get a real shop set up I am going to be hunting down and probably restore a Monarch 10EE, one of my dream tools.
 
Thanks to everyone for sticking with me through this drawn out process, but the drill is complete! The final assembly went fairly smooth without any major complications. I got the table cleaned up with a few scotchbrite pads and penetrating oil, wiring was pretty simple and now everything manipulates smoothly, the spindle has .002 run-out with a .25 drill rod so I am happy about that. When fired up she runs nice and smooth through the entire speed range. I put the Heinrich 8SV vise on the table that came with the drill, but it also came with a 4-inch version not in the picture.

I moved the drill about 250 miles to Northern Michigan on Tuesday (loaded up Monday night) from the school shop up to my dads house where it is going to stay until I can get a proper shop set up. I borrowed a trailer and a pallet jack, loaded up with a fork lift, and taken off with a cherry picker up north. Thankfully the trip went without incident!
