1979 CB750K I just want to drive it project

First time into an older bike but I have always loved the CB's. Picked up this 16K 79 CB750K for an even $1K for a beat around the country-side with the wife bike while I pick up another for a no-holds-barred cafe style racer for my enjoyment.
$1K nets BBQ painted exhaust, turd brown paint, mini-apes, and spiffy highway pegs

But it was all there and would start with a jump, which turned out to be a new "dry" battery. Addition of some CB550 bars, addition of a cb1100 master cylinder, and removal of the highway pegs/engine gaurds along with the crappy stock exhaust made major improvments. Next up a new set of V&H 4-into-1 pipes along with a handy garage re-spray changed the demeanor quite a bit.

Shot it with the Duplicolor pant shop red, still needs some clear, but did turn out a nice shade of flat/textured red, and mush better than the brown/gold that was there before.

Wow,nice piece...I always liked the tail on the 79' best :) A couple words of advice from another dohc owner though- Adjust the valves pronto,if you haven't already,to .005 not .003 like the manual says,it is wrong. ;) Tighten up the cam chains while you are in there, and you must run an airbox with stock carbs,as they are vacuum lift and DO NOT work with pods.period.Here is a picture of mine----

Nice looking bike. 8) Thanks for the heads up on the valves, chains, and the airbox, that might cure the carb ills I have currently, of to ebay I go. I also have a supersport front fender incoming to get rid of the dented original. The only thing I don't care for on the DOHC bikes are the side covers but for a weekend cruising bike I can overlook them. The next project will definately be a pre-79. Care to share some tips and tricks on those white gauge faces?

They are from anubis cycles....But I had to basically threaten the guy to actually get them. So I would recommend making your own.

And ride it I did. ;D Threw a half a can of Seafoam in with a fresh tank of gas and rode it down to Charlotte and back to pick up some car parts so I could fix my garage queen since I sold my daily driver Wednesday. Fairly uneventful ride except for when coming to a stop it wants to hold the revs instead of going to idle immediately but it does settle down once you are stopped for a bit. Other than that it purred like a kitten on the highway at 70mph.

Check the routing on the throttle cables as they are very touchy, also the stop bolt on the return cable loves to rattle loose and hold up the throttle. ;D

Just a quick note. I bought this bike a few weeks ago. It has now been polished, carbs being rebuilt, clubman bars, front 1/4 fairing, Tarozzi rearsets, and working on tank and tail section. I'll post a few pictures in the next day or so. I also have a 76 750k that is starting the transformation process.

I've been building and racing sportscars for the last 7 years and have returned to my roots. I have 3 bikes in restoration in my shop, all Hondas. Looking forward to being a part of this community again. The last 2 race cars are being sold for motorcycle inventory.

Thanks

Cut them off last night here's the latest as of Yesterday. I now need to get the seat plug really smooth and then make the fiberglass mold. The bike now has Tarozzi rearsets, clubmans, polished side covers, and all of the rust removed. After the seat mold I'll do the black base coat/clear coat. I'll post as I go.

Damn...You have been makin it happen! :o Care to take a sound clip of that exhaust for me?And shed some light on mounting those rearsets..

Thanks for the comments. I'll have to figure out how to post a sound bite. As for the rear sets....I'm not sure I'm totally satisfied with the placement yet. I used the rear passenger peg mount, used a couple of pieces of steel behind to keep the rear set straight and made new levers and linkage for the shifter and brake pedal. I can live with it as is for now.

For the next project I'm going to try to adapt a set of CBR rear sets and do a Ducati half fairing.

I lengthened the fairing about 3 inches over the weekend and made it so I could do a one piece mold. I'm going to use a Shelby Cobra tail light on the rear. Will post pictures as the week goes by to keep everyone updated.

I'm having a ball and meeting a ton of new friends.
