1982 Honda CM200T No Spark help

Hello guys,

So been trying to get this 1982 CM200T bike of mine running again. My friend had left the key on and drained the battery which I assume also fried the coil. I tested the coil and had just under 1 ohm. I also noticed the CDI unit was fried as well as the connectors were all black and when I removed it had corrosion and had melted a bit of the connection on the CDI. So I replaced the CDI with a new unit as well as a 12V Coil. Connected everything up and the bike has no spark. The original coil only had one wire going out to the harness but this coil has 2 connectors which show a positive and negative. So I ran the original wire from harness to the positive side of the coil and then grounded the negative to the frame. I then got my test lamp out and noticed 12V was not showing at the coil wire unless I unplugged the negative ground to the coils. The test lamp would show 12 volts only when I hit the starter button and when I left off the starter the light would dim out. Is this correct? I am not to familiar with CDI units but is power to the coils not constant? I've also remove both spark plugs and tried grounding out both to verify if there was a spark. I am at a loss here as I don't know what else I should be testing.

those are the wrong coils for your bike

the ignition on your bike is not 12volt powered its self excited by a trigger coil

here this is from the rebel forum but your bike has the same ignition

The exciter coil produces electricity for the CDI box via the magnets in the flywheel WHILE the flywheel is spinning. It will produce power to the CDI box BOTH at the time you press the starter button and after the engine catches and fires up. This is why the push start method will work with a dead battery.

First test I would make (the exciter coil is least likely on the Rebel to be the cause of no spark):
Turn ignition on, kill switch set to run, plug base resting on good ground metal (not valve cover as that is insulated/isolated with gaskets). Crank engine and look for good solid blue sparks (check each plug).

Make sure you have a good ground for plugs or it could damage the CDI box. Careful, high voltage can be lethal.

If no spark: I would take a slotted screw driver and remove the set screw inside the spark plug boot. Inside the hidden chamber below that is a spring and ceramic resister. Sometimes corrosion in there. The resister should read ~4,000 ohms.

Next I would unplug the coil primary wires and check the resistance across the coil primary terminals, should be a few ohms. Then check resistance from one primary terminal to spark plug wire (without ceramic resistor in boot), that should be ~4,000 ohms. I've posted details out in the forum on this set of tests.

Then I would do a resistance check on the exciter coil -the value for this test I believe I've posted. Marty (w4my) reports value of Exciter voltage: "You should get about 30 Volts AC at the red/blk wire terminal with your meter (-) on system/frame ground or battery (-)"
And Marty has provided other good tips in your second post on this subject.

I am not at home now and just giving a quick answer. My Rebel Shop Manual also has detailed diagnostic tests for the CDI box (resistance values), for each pin combination. Hopefully the CDI box is ok; I always carry a spare when on rides, good idea to pick one up if you are keeping the Rebel for a while.
 
Thanks for all that info. You mention coils but this is with just one. What would be the correct coil?

you need to check the exciter coil output

and i dont have access to a manual till i get to the shop monday
 
I saw that one on eBay but gave no description about it being the right one. The one I also purchased claimed to be the correct one for the model. I wish I could find a US distributor for that coil.

Where is the exciter coil located?
 
Shouldn't the black and white wire that goes into the CDI be hot when the ignition is turned on? Or shouldn't there be some 12V source to the CDI when ignition is turn on?

When I run my test lamp across all leads on the CDI with key in ignition and on I get no wires that are hot except for black / yellow when I hit the starter button.


Is that accurate?
 
the 12 v system is not hooked to the ignition in any way other than the ground wire shuts down the cdi

the rotor/flywheel magnets passing by the exciter coil charges the cdi it charges and fires the coil

its the modern equivalent of a magneto

you shoukld bve able to find a rebel 250 manual on line the electrical part of the cdui is the same as

the 12v cm200t
 
Has anyone tried an aftermarket CDI that they can recommend? I cannot find one that is 7 pin. The one I received is 6 and I still think it's not correct cause I am not getting spark. I know coil is to spec now since I review the manual and tested.

It's the one at the top of the image that is 7 Pin not 6. The one below is not correct.

I have a 7 pin from a 1980 CM200T that I'm not going to use. Can't tell you if it works, the bike had a frozen motor so I never tested for spark, just ripped it out and swapped in my 250 motor with the 250 harness. I can send it your way for the cost of shipping if you want to give it a shot.
 
Thanks to CALfeRacer for the CDI. Plugged it in and it fired right up. Good to know that the new one offered by Amazon is incorrect by stating it works for the bike. Appreciate the help by everyone and especially CALFeRacer for giving me that CDI!
 
Ok I have a 1981 CDI 200T twin star with no spark. I noticed the CDI plugs were corroded and melted so I replaced the plugs and then checked everything. Using a test light I have voltage all the way to the coil while cranking but still have no spark. I changed coils with two different ones from eBay that claim to be the correct part but still have no spark. The new coils from eBay are two wire coils and as soon as you ground the coil you loose all voltage coming from the cdi while cranking. Please advise.

Note: the bike previously ran for but after washing it I lost all spark. Also the kill switch is working just fine.
