And seriously cool job. How did you cut the big holes?

Big tools! ;) I have some of the Lenox bits, a vari-bit that cuts from 1/2inch to 1inch and a hole-saw bit that has a shank you can put into many size hole-saws, the big ones here are 2 1/2 inches.

Check out Lenox tools if you’re not familiar with them, I don't use their hand tools but their bits and saw blades kick ass, especially their reciprocating saw blades with "gold" teeth!

Re: Alex's 72 CB750: Riding the hell out of her and still tinkering...

Okay... so maybe I took a step backwards here, but I pulled the pods and went back to the stock intake/carb setup. At first I just did it to see what the difference would be. When I got the bike it was setup for pods, so I've never ridden it with the stock airbox. I've got like eight stock airboxes stored in a big rubbermaid container, and can you believe that out of all of those airboxes, I was just barely able to put together four of the boots/stacks that still had some rubber quality to them. It turned out to be a pain in the ass. I put together a box with a bottom I had that had been drilled a little bit, and a K&N filter element that looked brand new. When I finally got everything on and dialed in and took my first ride I was amazed at the difference. I lost a little bit at the top end (she's still more than capable of doing the ton) but what I gained at the bottom was most impressive. I may go back to the pods one day (doubtful) or some other intake setup (most likely), but for now I'm gonna rock the stock airbox. Besides, it was too much of a motherfucker to get it back on, and I'm not about to pull it back out for a few months! Here's a pic I took while working on my father-son build "The Rob-Bob" that shows the bike with the airbox on. I still need to clean the outside of the airbox. Not too bad looking eh?

Re: Alex's 72 CB750: Riding the hell out of her and still tinkering...

Thanks Joe. The next step is to get a working front brake (about damned time huh?). After that I'm thinkin about going to a four-into-one. We'll see. Also some more drilling as soon as Twisted and I can get his drill press back in working order. Probably the last update for a while as the bobber will be eating up my wrenching time for a bit (hoping to have her done before Barber!).

Re: Alex's 72 CB750: Riding the hell out of her and still tinkering...

I shot a little video of my bike running so you guys can hear her. The problem is she doesn't sound anything like the video. It sounds way different in real life... Maybe my camera has exceptionally shitty audio... I dunno. But here she is... starting first kick and running for a bit. I'm going to have to buy a nice digital camcorder instead of doing this from my crappy little camera.

I've also installed another set of levers on her. Twisted and I cut off the balls and ground them down, then we used his drill press to drill the levers. I sand blasted them the next day then took a counter sinker to them that the outline is shiny while the rest is dull. I don't have any pics of them on the bike (they're on in the video). But here's a crappy camera phone pic of them next to the old levers.

I'll get some better pics of these soon. I'm very pleased with them.
I also drilled a shifter and some other bits. Here's a pic of the shifter. Still some work to do on this. The other parts I'll show when they are closer to ready.

I haven't had much time for working on my bikes lately and most of that time has gone towards my Father/Son build; Eleanor Rigby. She's a rebel 250 bobber that we're building to be Robbie's first street bike. It's over in the bob and chop section. Anyway, more to come later...

Re: Alex's 72 CB750: New stuff... And finally video of the beast running.

Here's a better pic of the clutch lever on the bike.

Okay, lots more stuff to do but I doubt it'll get done with any kind of speed. I've put over 1000 miles on her since the rebuild. So I've spent way more time in the saddle than I have wrenching.

Reading this it sounds like you are doing all this to the balls you ground off. ouch! :P

Yes I see diesel... I will change it immediately to be properly worded! Ouch!

Re: Alex's 72 CB750: New stuff... And finally video of the beast running.

Okay. I thought I was almost done here... ya know rebuild a caliper and pow! Last night I was looking through Brandon's Barber pics and I became inspired. I remembered some of the things that I wanted to do and abandoned. I wanted my bike to be everything that it should be. Here we go again
I went outside and grabbed a spare top triple clamp... Then a hacksaw... And it all became clear to me.
100_2242.jpg

Hacksawing is a bit more work than I remembered, but I finally got the bits off that I wanted off...
100_2243.jpg

Then I took the piece to work today and went to town on it with a bench grinder. After that rough work (sorry no pic) I took the dual action sander to it with some 40 grit. When it looked good I media blasted it. After the media blasting I saw some flaws, so when I got home this afternoon I took the sander to it again.

Next thing is to blast it again tomorrow. My plan is to mount my speedo into my stock headlight bucket and eliminate my tach. My idiot lights will go into the four holes in the top triple clamp, which will be enlarged and fitted with lenses.
Cycle Xchange triple clamp??? Nah, It's better built than bought friends!
I'm also considering removing my tank and beating some knee dents into it and I've got some other spare parts that I've been drilling. I'm now going into stage two... or three... or four... fuck it, I'm going into the next stage of my build.
More soon!

Re: Alex's 72 CB750: Here I Go Again...

You know, if you hit those pieces lightly with a step drill, the holes will have a cool chamfer or bevelled edge to them. 8)

Re: Alex's 72 CB750: Here I Go Again...

We used a countersink bit to do that beveled edge! Some of the pics he used are prior to that step. He blasted them after drilling them, then used the counter sink so the bevel would shine a bit and the reast would be dull.

I used the step bit on my rear sets, that works good but the counter sink is a little bit cleaner of a bevel!

Re: Alex's 72 CB750: Here I Go Again...

Yeah, I've still got to figure out how much to enlarge the holes for the idiot lights, then I'll use the countersink bit like I did with the levers. The counter sink bit works great on aluminum but it has some trouble with steel, so I use a step bit on steel parts. Hopefully I'll get the clamp blasted today and that'll be the final finish on it. Tonight I hope to start figuring out how to recess my speedo into my headlight bucket. There's a small how-to in the 50 dollar mod thread, but it's for a cb450 I think. I've got to figure out how to make the speedo clear my headlight. I'm also thinking of fabricating a new bucket if the old one won't work.
Twisted: Where was the bondo in my tank? I can't remember if it will interfere with my plan of beating in some knee dents...

Hey I'm not the only one did that.
DSC07988.jpg

Yours came out well.

I've kinda changed my direction on placing my idiot lights in the 4 holes though but if your looking for 12 volt led I'm going to use these guys. Cheap and pre-wired for 12 volts with bezel. Plus they come in all of the colors needed. Plus you don't have to enlarge the holes too much.

As for the headlight bucket, I would cut it just past the trim ring, put the speedo in to the back half and make a spacer to fit to give you the clearance you need for light/wiring/speedo than fiberglass it all together.

Re: Alex's 72 CB750: Here I Go Again...

Nice job file shaping the triple, I think with some finish work that's going to be really neat looking. I have a triple off of........something old and probably European that looks like that minus the extra holes. I polished it up one day and it really does loo nice. Something to consider, if you plan is to polish it and you're obviously talented with a file and a sense of form.....

Have those holes tig welded closed an continue with the smoothing process. If you're gonna paint there are any number of good epoxy based fillers that'd work.

Very fun, I wish all top clamps couldbe cleaned up that nicely

Re: Alex's 72 CB750: Here I Go Again...

nice man! bike looks and sounds great! i am a big fan of doing that to levers, every bike i own i have done that (but the wifes bobber, she said she likes balls) can not argue wiht that....
i am a bit worried about the size of the hole in the shifter lever man, that is pretty big, looks to me like it may snap, but then again i can not touch it to see how tuff it is. the top of the trees looks awesome man! just awesome!!! nice work

Re: Alex's 72 CB750: Here I Go Again...

Thanks for the light tip Jay, I'm going to order those!
Joe, The shifter still feels really strong, so I'll use it. If it breaks during riding then the worst that could happen is I miss a gear right? So I'll keep a spare one in my backpack in case of this unfortunate event.
Swagger, thanks for the kind words bro! I think I'm gonna leave the tree in the raw blasted finish as nothing else on my bike is polished. As for the holes, I'm going to fill them with the idiot lights.
Here's a pic of the top clamp all blasted and finished minus the lights.

Re: Alex's 72 CB750: Here I Go Again...

at least clear coat the top triple....its gonna oxidize really quick if you don't being so porous

Re: Alex's 72 CB750: Here I Go Again...

Then it'll match all of the other oxidized aluminum on the bike!
Nah, I'm gonna throw a clear over it and every other part I leave in the blasted finish. Can't have it rotting eh?
Also I've settled on a final name for my bike. The Screamin Cheeto was cute... for about five minutes. So I've been working on something better. And with my bud Twisted's help, I've got it! Dolores. Dolores is a nice name... and she was the goddes of pain and suffering. And I've done a lot of both with her. Whatcha think?
