The clip ons are looking good Stik! I don't trust my welding enough to do something like that.

I saw the other night you said you work midnight - what do you do for work again?

Yup, tonight's my last night til friday night. I can't use the chat feature from my phone though.

The 18th?! That's a pretty sweet little vacation!

I work in the stereotypical Pittsburgh "still" mill. Steady midnight, 12 hour shifts, 4 days on / 4 days off. The division I work at makes some of the largest custom pieces in the world.

That sounds pretty cool. We work a rotating shift, no more than 4 days at a time. Then once a month we get 6 days off, four 8hr relief days then 5 more days off. Works well to take the four 8hr days off for a nice length of time off.
I built an engine stand today and ordered exhaust tubing and mandrel bends from Cone Engineering last week. Hope to get started on that and get the top end apart.

I cleaned grease and grime off the engine today and bolted it to the engine stand I made. Got a call from Cone Engineering today and they don't have the madrel bends I need for the exhaust. I'm going to order the tubing and bends from another source and get the collector through Cone Eng. Since I can't start on the exhaust, tomorrow I'm pulling the top end off to see what needs to be done.

Well here's a pic of the simple engine stand I made. Hope to get the cam out so i can pull the head tonight.

AHHH! Bad news on the head. The head is smoked, garbage. Luckily I have an extra engine. Will start taking that one apart. What a bummer

Slack cam chain has machined its way through the head to the adjuster. It could be welded ,but heads are cheap

Hey Teaser, I have a another engine and I pulled it apart and it is good. The chain has worn a little bit into the head and but not much. Is there a better set up? Aparently the plunger must bind up a little so it won't float, or would it not have occured with proper adjustment? Is it a design flaw? I know on my kz1300, I replaced tensioner with one off of a zx10 because the original ones bind and the chain breaks. Does this happen with these?

head #2 is a good usable piece. The valve seats are primo. Took the cylinder off and no ridge and scoring. I might be able to get by with a light hone, rings and valve job. Time will tell... I'm going to remove the pistons today and check the piston to cylinder clearance.

I'm on my phone and can't make it out, but what's the problem?

Oh wow - my phone cut off the right side of the photo! Kinda obvious now...... Glad you have another head to work with!

Well, I measured the cylinder and pistons last night and are in the new spec (not the wear limit!). So it looks like just a set of std. rings. Yeah! I got the rest of the tubing and mandrel bends ordered from SPD today for the exhaust. One step closer...

Not much more progress, but some. I got heli-coils put in both spark plug holes today, ordered a set of std rings and a full gasket set. The 2 into 1 collector, springs, and spring tabs came UPS today and the tubing and bends should be a couple more days. I also started cleaning up the aluminum on the cases behind the cylinders.

I got some 4130 7/8" tubing coming to finish out my clip-on handlebars and an 18" piece of 2" 6061 aluminum to make the starter block off plug and axle spacers. Still sanding on the engine. I believe at this point I will polish the cases and paint the head and cylinder. I seem to change my mind at the last minute though, so we'll see what happens.

While waiting for parts, I got busy with holes. I screwed up and only ordered rings for one piston. Ordered hole #2 today. Waiting for exhaust parts, gaskets, rings, and a set of grips. Hopefully get the cylinder and head cleaned up tonight and hone the cylinder this weekend. Also waiting for some chromoly tubing for the bars and the 2" aluminum.

Looking good man! You're not getting much love here but I am watching closely. Got smokey's electrical ironed out and will have that wrapped as soon as I get back from the beach.

I haven't been too active working on the Honda project. I did, however, get a couple more tabs cut off and cleaned up on the frame that didn't need to be there anymore. I got most of the parts in to build the exhaust system. Still haven't decided on the megaphone yet what to do. Either get a reverse shorty or build one. Got the front fender mount also. Needs a little adjustment, but pretty satisfied with it.
