79 KZ650 SR / GSXR Mutt

Started stripping the frame down to be painted, or I might just leave it bare and hit it with some clear for now.

The raw metal look is very cool. One of my mountain bikes is bare metal with some clear. Even the heat marks from welding are left as is... I like it!
 
My old bmx bike was stripped and cleared as well.. love the bare look.. got the engine polished up a bit as well.. thinking of leaving the frame half assed with some black remnents left over just the righ amount of rat
 
Finished up stripping the frame and cleaning up the back wheel swingarm and shocks... Now i just need to clear everything and begin reassembly.

Well i got the motor back in the beast ;D what a pain in the a$$ that is to do by yourself.. I just hope i got all the mounts fastened up correctly :o ... Reconnected the wiring harness and battery and we got power :'( never thought I could be so proud lol.... now i just have to tuck away all the wires and finish connecting the carbs and gas tank and see if she will turn over for me...

Not sure what I want to do about the headlight and tailight situation just yet. I have been looking online for some headlight ears to mount on the GSXR forks to accept my old headlight but for the price i can buy a whole new headlight assembly and so something a little more creative for the cost.. any who.. picking up my seat from the upholster tonight, cant wait to see how it turned out.. I had him cut the sides down a bit to get rid of the skirt and roll the edge a little bit to expose the frame rails a little more. Should be pretty low profile and sleek..

So a few more hours of did ling around and i should be waking her up by this weekend..

Sorry I am not to skilled with a cellphone camera in a dim area. But you get the idea right? All two of you that are probably reading this post going I didnt think he would ever really follow through with it. That is the samething one of my buddys thought and now he is going to owe me a $100. 8) I went a little over budget with all the new parts and accessories that i needed but that was to be expected doing a build like this.. It is alot cleaner in person then it appears to be in the photos. (trust me) Hopefully going to have it painted or dipped this coming fall or winter. Or if I am feeling froggy and buy another bike this summer it will be stripped back down again.

I did all of this without the use of a manual, went off of recollection from the disassembly. Suprised myself a little when it came to the rewiring :D . Now I just hope the carbs are ballanced properly and jetted for the new exhaust that is going on this weekend. Can't wait for the weather to break and get back out on this little toy.
 
Still unsure how I feel about the way the ignition came back from the machinist. It is a little bulky but at the same time kind of fits with the overall look of the bike for the most part.

I appreciate it Justin, and I think down the road i am going to go that route and get rid of the ignition as well. Possibly put a hidden switch somewhere on the bike? who knows for now I am just worried about getting it fired up before May 1st so i can collect my money $100 lol.. I probably wont even take the money, but instead make him buy me a beer every place we stop when riding this summer.

Thanks Recessions, But i dont know if I can handle looking over the overall cost just yet :o lol.. budget was around 1500 not including cost of bike.. The bike only cost me $250, it was a paper weight when i got it. Fixed it in a day and rode it ever since. I believe my budget has now exceeded 2k for everything thus far. I will catagorize when finished... ??? then again are we ever truely finished?? :D
 
Well its been awhile since i updated but since the last post I have got everything hooked up put gas in and gave her hell.... No suprise to me she wouldnt start.... Checked the coils noticed i had two wires swapped.. corrected the issue and then eurika!! The beast came back to life and more fierce than ever... This mac exhaust sounds amazing as do the Pods, couldn't be happier with the sound.. Then the disapointment set in that it is running rough still so im going to finish securing the wires then its off to the mechanic to get fine tuned..

Another thing is I got my seat by from the upholster and am not to happy with how it came out. The seat looks great, but he got a little saw happy on the back end and created a huge gap between the seat and my frame. So i got on ebay ordered a 650 C rear fairing, found a new 650 B seat and now going to have another seat made and add the fairing. Looks pretty bad ass with the fairing a little more modern.

Seat Gap pictures... Might be able to save this with some modifications but not sure about the way it came out.

Im going to try and tweak it a little this weekend see if i can come up with a way to make it look good. i was thinking about welding a custome brake light around the back to cover the gap.. but not sure what im going to do just yet.
