Is it worth it? does it have options as far as customizing?

Thanks for the info!

It's not an 86. The newest they made them was 82. Not worth the asking price IMO. Not bad bikes, but not great ones either.

based on my research they made the original xs00 until 1982 then they made the DOHC xs400 until 86/87ish. I found a link last night that listed the exact year but now I can't find it.

The one in the ad, is most certainly a first gen SOHC. The DOHCs were more commonly known as an xs or xj400 Maxim.

its really slim pickin up there in OR.....My first bike (my biggest mistake so far) was a 2004 Purple Ninja 250 that I :-[ financed at like 16% or some ridiculous amount, I got it used at a bike shop with 300 miles....ended up costing me a touch under 5k with a warranty and all that BS ....I rode the shit outta it for 2 years (after the first week I wanted something faster but I was stuck with it :-[) ......I was lucky to sell it for $2,000 at the time it had been dropped like over 10 times..... My 2nd bike was a 07 DRZ400s on/off ...I'd get another one in a heart beat....it did the ton faster than the 250 the only draw back was it could only do the ton it couldn't do the ton +1 so for that reason i wished it went a bit faster.....If i could do it all over again i'd get a Ducati monster 750(still don't have one yet) the first time and i'd probably still have it

The honda dreams are tempting.

That honda cb360t that desmo linked to in another topic is my best bet so far. He has dropped the price to 1500 and has completely and perfectly restored that thing. I will lose the windscreen but the bike is perfect. He is fixing the push button starter button right now then I am going to snatch it up I think. If for whatever reason I don't get it I will just hold out for what I want, I got some time before I can take my mandatory riders training to get my endorsement. Oregon just went to a mandatory training program if you are under the age of 44.

How arbitrary is 44 ? A mystical age where insurance underwriters just don't care anymore or an epiphany occurs where the gods of motorcycling combined anoint a rider with blessed skills ...

I have found recently , just south of me , several interesting projects . A KZ440 (that by the way will flat stomp the Honda and Yamaha) in an aluminium dirtbike frame with street fittings . An old school XL350 in a RD350 frame . A powroll XL250 in a redline chrome molly dirt track frame all caff'd out . Several water cooled dirtbike singles in street twin chassis and last but not least a street driven CR500 . They all have one thing in common . All the hard work has been done and they are unfinished projects for under 2k .

You're just looking in all the wrong places or lost track of your imagination . It's time to make use of google's image search with some unique terms . Not too long ago I posted a pic of a Roland Sands thing that had a CR500 in it . There's even some youtube of it around .

Sometimes you have to be lucky others you have to be bright . Still others you have to follow the beat of a different drum and mix and match engines , chassis bits , and body work to suit .

I'm just trying to point out that if I can throw together the better part of 5 makes , a dirt engine , a street chassis , body work that started off as a metal halide lamp reflector and a pipe that once served as an eductor for a deaireating feed tank and still pass it off as a bike then you can do better .

Okay I'll quit with the motivational speech and offer this . Get even a glimmer of a picture of what you want it to look like and I can help source and engineer the odd bits . I'm not the only one here that can either . There's this bum that lives under a freeway over pass in Albany..... :-)

44 is arbitrary. next year it moves to 55 then 66 then everyone.

You bring up some good points. I am interested in creating some "evil" creation at some point. My only issue is right now I am trying to buy something completely ridable and reliable, that I can ride the crap out of. I do not have the time presently (very time consuming apprenticeship) to create a masterpiece, so in essence I am looking for a completed project to ride.

I also lack the knowledge about potential from the different bikes, like the kz440 and others. Hence why I have been asking so many questions about different bikes this week. Someone does have a kz550 ltd for sale here, looks pretty good in the pics. I am going to look at a completely restored cb360 and probably get it, if it is all that it claims to be. I am more interested in getting a bike that is user friendly, I am a novice than getting a bike that is super fast. When I finish my xs650 that should be plenty fast.

Again, I really appreciate your post. It opens the mind to more possibilities.
