bad coils

So according to my meter, I have 2 bad coils. One with a bad secondary and one with both winds bad. Question is: what would burn them out prematurely? and where can I get a new pair? I know the bike must've been running pretty lean last time I ran it and consequently, hot. I already replaced one of the coils with a junkyard find... and obviously, it's gone on me now too. So I'd like to get some new parts this time, but they're discontinued. I don't want to keep tracking down parts if I'm just going to burn them all out. What can I use? Fitting the stock mounts is less important because I can fabricate new ones, but fitting under the tank and working are both very important.

Thoughts?

BTW: it's a 1975 Honda CL 360 if ya don't know.

I believe you can just use a set of 5ohm or 3ohm with a ballist (sp) Bousch coils. Someone correct me on this if Im wrong. Super fat spark.

have you checked your condensers???are you feeding power to the proper side of the coil(back\white),,??? 3 ohm coils are for CDI's and will overheat,,,,,4 ohm Yamaha coils will work and you can replace the HT wire(screws out).....they worked on my cb 350 race lump until I installed an electronic system.....good luck!!

Well the condesor is fairly new and I neither know what it does nor how to check it. There's something in the book about checking its' capacity and resistance. The wires are hooked up according to color with the blue wire and yellow wire (although they're actually both blue since I've got 2 right side coils) running to the points and the black/white running (most immediately) to the kill switch. I determined them to be bad by looking for continuity beween the wire leads and the attaching stay with my little RadioShack meter set to 200 OHM. I made sure my contacts were good by touching the leads first to both ends of the wire where I could, one lead on the bullet connector and the other on the solder point on the body of the coil (buried in wax) Then tested by touching one lead to a freshly sanded part of the mounting stay and the other to the end of the bullet connector (both coils at tis point are in hand, off the bike). By the way, I'm now not getting anything so it seems that in the last 24 hours that last wind has gone.

Can these readings be accurate?! I tried the same test on my 750 with nothing... so according to my interperatation, I own 5 coils, and they're all bad. I've got to be doing something wrong. I mean these things are completely encased in plastic! How can they just go to shit like that?!

What's a CDI? High Tension are the colored ones that go into the points right? Electronic system? That sounds good right now.

I've said it once... and I'm sure I'll say it again. I'm a fabricator, not a mechanic. Maybe if my dad had any interest in cars and engines when I was a kid rather than plastic models and construction, I'd be better at this stuff, but probably worse at that stuff.

Switch to a dyna s man...way less headaches and you can get em for about 200 bucks on OldBikeBarn.com

Actually, since you're a fabricator, and i know a "bit" about electro...i'll research what i can about your points and condensor issue (i doubt you have that many bad coils) if you can help me out with pounding knee inserts into a tank? Though to be quite honest man i would consider switching over to electronic, its not that tough and its way more reliable and you're not going to get the spark you NEEEEED out of a points system..

cdi is the modern pointless electronic ignitions, they still use ignition coils cust no points to set.

when you talk about an electronic system, are you talking about something like this?

(a little over half way down the page)

Thats all I know of, but on top of it not fitting, that wouldn't solve my coil problem.

talk to noel believe he went electronic on his 450, my 650 was one first honda's to have factory cdi no points.

I'm sure it's something simple. Do you want me to come by and have a look?

Two heads are better than one, I'm at work currently though. I'll give you a call when I get home if it's not obscenely late.

listen buckaroo bob,,,,,,,,,,,as stated ,no way you have 5 coils going south,HT(HIGH TENSION) are your plug wires, old lump honda's and other bikes need the plug caps renewed and the HT's,,,,bad wires simply fire to ground at the head!

yup, coils aren't the problem, bike still wont fire but we did manage to get spark (main switch was wired wrong) I just am doing something wrond when testing them.

...on to the next problem...
