Best Oil???

Ok so imma change my oil tomorrow and the last couple times I just put regular plain ole Honda 4 stroke oil. I know synthetic oil is a step up but what's ya'lls preference???

Plain jane 20w50 motorcycle oil - pure dino all the way. No need to spend money on fancy synthetics and you may find your clutch gets slippy and oil starts to seep past your 40 year old gaskets.

Just don't use car oil - detergents and such aren't good for your bike. Some suggest Diesel oil - I've used that in my XS from time to time.

10w40 seems a little thin, especially in the heat of the summer.

I've been using Shell Rotella 15w/40, with a dash of Lucas oil stabiliser (for the ZDDP)
Level was reduced to 1200PPM couple of years ago, 1800PPM seems to be optimal amount and what our bikes were designed for
I'll probably be getting plain ZDDP in 30weight to add next time though.

Another plug for Shell rotella 15w-40 white bottle, for the price its hard to beat and from what i have experienced it stands up just as good as more expensive boutique oils. I do tend to change it a little more often but i can afford to at its price.

Yeah I've heard good things about Rotella but haven't found any up here yet.

Ha! Dirtbag has the George Foreman model cb360.......

Another plug for Rotella. I can't speak for its long term use but have heard it recommended by many long term users.

And to our Canadian brothers: I've also heard there is another diesel oil available at Canadian Tire that has the same properties as Rotella. Can't remember which brand of course......

ive switched from the white bottle (rotella t) to the blue bottle (t-6 synthetic) and it seems to be pretty good.. though I cant tell a difference other than it cost $10 more for the blue, so im probably gonna switch back to the white

Rotella 15-40 white bottle for me in both my old bikes. Rotella is JASO (Japanese motorcycle spec) rated, for what that's worth.

Also, Valvoline Premium Blue 15-40 Diesel (also JASO-rated) on occasion.

I tried Synthetic on an older bike (XS-650) once, and in cold weather, I was definitely getting seepage from the gaskets, which stopped when I switched back to dino..no knock on synthetic, but it just didn't seem worth it for an older bike.

I like the idea of adding some Lucas-type additive to ramp up the ZDDP..I'll have to try that

Yeah, seriously. Ever since I saw that I've been keeping an eye out for a cheap Cub 90.

I've been told that Royal Purple Break-in Oil is great to run on a regular basis because of its high metal content. Can anyone confirm?

The answer is that almost any oil available today is more than capable of keeping your bike running for years to come. Just change it regularly - and avoid that nasty Rotella stuff. Just kidding. We use Honda GN4 in our CB160 race bikes and no evidence of wear or oil related issues.

I looked into it last night (I read it on the GSR)- it was "any" diesel oil that had the JASO rating. And a good point was brought up about using diesel oil: it's relatively cheap and easy to find.

hmmm, i switched to mobil 1 synth blend for high mileage, i dont have high mileage, but it ran great, i really liked the difference
