Best Oil???

So I got the rotella 15 40 and the bike runs great still need to do some carb tuning tho (does that ever end??? haha) and I think my spark advancer may be defunked but after it hits full advance it runs great!
 
Definetly agree with you on that one Never use car oil. Some of them have FAA or something can't remember the accronym but they are Friction Modifiers and will make your clutch slip really bad and be hard on stuff. When I said plain ol 10w40 castrol non synthetic i should have specified the motorcycle version of the oil. Oreilly's sells it around here. I run 10w40 on a CB450.

Just don't use car oil - detergents and such aren't good for your bike. Some suggest Diesel oil - I've used that in my XS from time to time.

10w40 seems a little thin, especially in the heat of the summer.

In the very few unbiased oil tests I've seen over the years Mobile-1 always comes out the best. Same thing with their oil filters, if you can find them.


I've been using Rotella-T as well. I also use it in my truck, because diesels have both special and enormous oil needs. The truck doesn't burn any worth mentioning but it takes 4 gallons (roughly 17 Liters) to do an oil change with filter. Anyway, its a very good oil and suitable to high temperature operation.

Any updates or new thoughts? When I first bought the bike I was under the impression the Honda GN4 was the only thing I should buy..

Expensive! Also, during the really hot days of summer, the clutch would stick... A lot...

Anyone have any new thoughts?
 
Use Rotella, I've switched to 5W/40 full synthetic with about 2oz of ZDDP additive
DO NOT USE 20W/50 in old Honda CB, it will destroy cam bearings
 
o'reilly aotparts has motorcycle oils for 3.99 a quart i usually get the castrol 10-40 4T..
i have used rotella no complaints
Pj the zinc what is it called ? brand name is it a common auto store item ? thanks
 
I've got some from Eastwood and ZDDP MAXX from e-bay.
I only use 2 oz from a 4oz bottle (or half bottle of Eastwood) as Rotella has 1200PPM and 1800PPM is max needed, no benefit going higher.
When you get over 2200PPM it can attack bronze bushings.
Anywhere that does 70's 'muscle cars' will have it on the shelf for use with 'solid lifter cams'

Just today I read something that said any JASO oil has zinc added and is for our bikes, therefore ZDDP is unnecessary.

How does everyone feel about that statement?

A few posts up someone says they like Rotella, which is JASO, AND they use ZDDP..
(sorry I didn't quote that post)

Then someone else says too much zinc can hurt bronze..
 
zddp is an important additive for extreme pressure sliding surfaces like the cam lobe to rocker arm interface on many vintage bikes
i like the castrol 4T at 3.99 L and it is pretty, almost clear going in
that rotella has a nasty color >:(
 
Most important thing is don't overthink it. Just dump some oil in and get out on the road. You're not running this thing at 9,000 RPM I'd hazard a guess. For running around town you could probably dump maple syrup in it and smell nice while you're riding. Mmmmmm.... pancakes.

A gallon of pure Maple Syrup is like $80 in Chicago!

..it sure would smell good though and I'm a big fan of pancakes...
