Bike wont start help...

Ba Dum Tsss....
Hey guys, I just got a Yamaha Xj650 which was given to me by my friend since it was in his garage for over 15 years :D I got the bike brought it in a truck.Everything on the bike looked fine. I cleaned it, The CDI unit was missing got that too, hooked up a battery. All the four plugs were good, and the carbs were fine too. So i tried to start the bike but I couldn't. Whenever I tried hitting the start button it made a clattering noise, it seemed that the chain on the dynamo was slipping off the sprocket. But after a while i tired it again, it started and stopped, and the same happened when I tried it. I was hearing the same clattering noise. Please suggest me what might be the problem here, and how can i solve it. I want to build it as a cafe racer, but the engines not running, it's only a dream for me right now :D

when you say it seemed the chain was slipping off the sprocket, did you verify that? the first thing you need to do is get a manual, after that, you can check on your suspicions of what's going on. because in my head, a clattering noise probably means the battery's dead and has enough juice to close the solenoid but not enough to turn the starter motor

Sounds like a bad battery to me also ! Is the motor turning over when its clicking or just clicking when you hit the go button ?

I assume the sound is on the left side of the bike because the solenoid and starter are both on that side... Where is the sound coming from? A bad/low battery could make the solenoid chatter like that. That sound would be right behind the left side cover. The sound coming from near the engine could be the starter... I know a lot of the early 80's Viragos has starter shimming problems which would cause the starter motor to not work properly and you have to shim it.. I'm unsure if this issue effected anything other than the Viragos though... Let us know where the sound is coming from or post a video and we'll have a better idea.

Actually the battery works fine, I took off another battery from my Royal enfield 350 and hooked on to it. Still im hearing the clattering noise.. The motor tries to turn then it stops. I'm bad at explaining things and also i dont have much knowledge on the XJ650 :( The sound is definately coming from the engine..

what is the cranking amp requirement for the xj starter motor, what is the cranking requirement for the 350? in my ignorant days I installed a battery on a cb750 that couldn't turn over the starter even though it was brand new and charged

Alright, its the drive chain.. I couldnt name it before lol.. its too loose to stay on the sprocket.. Do you guys know any website I can buy it from which ships worldwide.. Or can I use any other chain in replacement of it..

Its not stretching, the back side of the chain which hooks on to the place is all grinded off. it has no proper grip. How did this happen? :S

Hey Guys, I wanted to ask you. Since the Drive Chain is not available in a brand new condition and i only found old ones on ebay.. Can I use the type of chain we use to run the rear wheel, I guess its called the Drive chain too. The common type of chain. to replace the one XJ650 has. Sorry for my bad explanation.

If so, it's possibly a loose tensioner, so you'll want to look at that as well.

Parts are available from Yamaha, or from BikeBandit. Look up your year/make and go from there.

Bike Bandit doesn't ship to Southern Asia, however you could have it shipped to a forwarding company in the US and the forwarding company would send it to you there. Check www.MyUS.com

Orders over $99 are free shipping to the continental US, so you would only pay the shipping fees (and service fee) that the forwarding company charges.

i somehow seriously doubt the hyvo chain ground off its teeth, if it did, it ground off the teeth on the crank and starter gear as well, so you'll need to replace all of those parts, my bet is that the starter clutch on the sprocket on the crank is not engaging when you spin the chain and you're interpreting that as the chain isn't engaging the sprocket. if you want info for sure, post pictures of the chain and both sprockets.

+1 on what RocCityCafe is saying........too many times people have over looked the fact of the starter clutch has gone to hell especially since it has been sitting for sooo long

you need around 60~80 amps to get motor to start turning then it needs about 40~45 amps to keep turning.
A car battery and jumper leads would have been better to check the electrical system
The hyvo chain looks fine from the pics, it's much more likely the solenoid contacts are burned plus starter clutch bolts/rollers are worn or damaged.
It's the same style as Honda, Suzuki et.al. with the same problems
May be easier to Google motorcycle starter clutch?
Oh, I'm pretty sure that's the alternator drive chain not starter chain

Can anyone identify the primary drive chain from this part list?

It would be a lot of help for me. I tried searching it on the starting motor but i dont see it..
