Cant keep it runnin

Hey everyone..

I have a suzuki gt185 that runs like a beauty.. until yesterday.

It usually starts on the first or second kick with the choke on, after a couple minutes I take the choke off and it idles at around 1.5~1.7k.

Last night I took the bike out and it had a harder time starting... it was really tough to keep it running. With the choke on (or off) I had to keep the throttle open about 1/4 of a turn to keep it idling. Even when it warmed up it would die unless I kept the throttle partially open (at least 1/4 open). I checked the air filter and I checked the fuel, but that didn't seem to fix anything.

If I try to ride it with the throttle open quite a bit it will go but it has no power. When its dying it doesn't sound like it bogs down.. it just dies as the idle speed drops bellow 1.5k. I haven't messed with the idle screw or anything like that, it just happened out of nowhere.

What do you think the issue is? What can I do to fix this?

ps. It's 100% stock

I noticed one of the mufflers is clickier, while the other one purrs... I dont recall this happening in the past. Is that an indicator of gunk in the carb on the clicking exhaust side? Or is that something completely different?

It might be that there is gunk in the pilot jet on that side. Which is causing it go get limited air fuel mix. I would start by cleaning that carb. But why only clean one. It is simple enough, just don't damage the jets.

It's got a 'Dyno-Start (12v DC generator/starter - almsot excactly the same as RD200 8) )
Hopefully it's pilot jet though, the electrical system is a bit difficult to work with if you don't understand DC systems (major issue is people try to give advice for permanent magnet AC systems ::) )
'Clicking' exhaust is a leaking gasket or base gasket blown out

I have no idea about DC systems but if you know a part is weak it is always a good place to start.

Try it with another battery, or just buy a new one. If it does not fix the issue at least you have a known good battery.

The bike drips a little bit over night, it looks like it comes down the shift arm. I thought it was just the gasket ring that goes around there... Is it a bigger issue than that? Probably?

I was ticking of cleaning the carbs this weekend

If it comes from the shift side it is most likely gear box oil.

Being a two stroke it does not have crank case oil. Just an oil/fuel mixture.

What colour is the oil. Two stroke is usually a green or blue. (as you probably know from owning a 2t)

Sounds like a gearbox oil leak. Probably from a worn shift shaft seal. This would be unrelated to the running issues.

The engine oil gets mixed with the fuel to provide lubrication upon fuel intake.

Could be a fouled plug or points on the dead cylinder the popping could be intermittent firing. The oil injection system on the GT oils the crank and piston with continuous burn off of the residual crank oil so it wont smoke at high rpms like the Yams and Kawis... Check the throttle actuated injection adjustment to see if you are maybe pumping the ratio too high/low.

The 185 is the same as this with one less jug

Lots of good input to check. BTW in that diagram it says "transmission oil" but that's a little misleading. That reference is to the right bearing. The cranks is oiled with two stroke injector oil from the tank.

I would fit a fresh battery first and if that doesn't fix it, see if both pipes are getting hot. Remove and clean both carbs carefully. Clean the points and check the plugs. If they are old/worn replace with OEM spec parts or with fine wire/Iridium equivalents.

If the battery fixes things, still give it a good service and do those things anyway and then check the charging system.

Sounds like you just have a worn in motorcycle 8)
It's simple enough to check carbon brush length on generator, you only need to remove left engine cover
Clutch pushrod seal leak is common if drive chain is worn or has been mis-adjusted (highly likely in last 35+ yrs)
It is way more noticeable when bike is left on side stand
Tan coloured oil will be from transmission rather than partially burned oil from engine

I am currently at work, trying to earn money to invest back into this machine..

Thanks for all your input guys, you all seem very knowledgeable. I will start with a new battery and then if I need to advance I'll take the carb off and check the jets.

Please keep the suggestions coming tho :P

The things we have suggested should all be done and cost is nothing more than plugs and maybe points (after battery). If there are still issues, come back and I'm sure people can help you through the process. And as PJ said so eloquently, you will be able to do it.

We are willing to help you spend the kids college fund also, if you want to make that thing into a rocket... :o

Update:

I charged the battery over night, and that didn't fix the issue. I plan on buying a new battery tomorrow before I take the carbs off.
