CB450 Start Up

Let me add some details to this thing. Bike was on the road in 04 and has been barn stored since. Yes, some bolts may be rusty, but water damage is unlikely, tons of neglect is unlikely, it's mint looking, no rust

ok, let me see if i have this right, the bike is "mint" and it was stored in a barn where there was no moisture and it was not neglected yet is has rusty tappet cover screws and gunk in the engine?

1. New oil, plugs, battery.

having difficulty getting her to fire

2. Valves. Didn't get to check all the clearances, just the ones on the exhaust side of the engine (rusty screws didn't drill out to get to).

so im guessing that the rusty screws you are mentioning hold the small cover that goes over the adjuster which means that you could not adjust them which also suggests that the previous guy that was a TARD did not get in there and f them up in which case its reasonable to "guess" that since it purportedly ran fine when it was parked last, they are at least adjusted close enough that it will still run fine again without touching them.

stillatwork said:
However, I'm seeing them move in the front.

EXACTLY hat are you seeing move, the cover screws or the tappet adjusting screws or the cob web spiders.

stillatwork said:
One of the tappets in the back the tappet with the screw was actually off. What's the deal with that by the way

how would we know, but it certainly should be in the rocker instead of just laying in the head.

stillatwork said:
...you just adjust that screw to adjust the cap

this makes absolutely no sense . . the "cap" is the outer cover and there is no adjustment for it.

stillatwork said:
...there is no locknut like say a 550?

there should be a lock nut on the tappet adjusting screw, not on the tappet cover hold down/securing screw.

stillatwork said:
3. Cleaned carbs. However when I'm starting her up

does this means that it actually fires?

stillatwork said:
I'm getting tons of like just low pressure in general, pressure screws don't really seem to be working (Raising/Lowering pressure)

stillatwork said:
...from the top of the carbs I can like what looks like foam coming out.

im guessing that you really dont mean that you actually "like what looks like foam coming out.".

if you have "foam" coming out the top of the carbs it might help to have a photo and the EXACT location that this "foam" is being expelled from.

stillatwork said:
...does anyone have a good way to tune these fucking carburetors from scratch because they're a pain in the ass.

what do you want to tune a set of carbs on a bike if it was running properly when it was parked?

stillatwork said:
IT seems like there's just tons of gunk in the engine?
EXACTLY what do you mean by gunk and EXACTLY how does gunk get in an engine that is as pristine as you now imply it is? . . your statements contradict themselves.

Well, I just figuered it would cuz I know it sure gets me goin when I huff it from the Redi Whip aerosol dispensers in the dairy section of my local food store.
You know that's dangerous? Put in a balloon, man. I remember this one time... wait, nevermind. I forgot.

No nonsense. I've seen junk hondas run for years and years. Your junk engine just might run. If you listen.

Look at the format of your last post Barn, you gotta get off that tablet. Sheesh. DOT DOT DOT Ok, there ya go.

i find if you get a good nuetral flame going on yer oxy-assetylene torch them just snuff out that p-erfect blue flame ,then use the mix of gas to get her to fire ;) just make sure you got a really stong battery a pair in series for 24 volts seams to get the smoke out as well

:D :D :D :D

OHHHHKAYYYY. Anyone seen the 80's drug commercials?

"You barnett, I learned it by watching you"

This is how it's done.

new tires (5 year lifespan obviously expired, but the tread's essentially perfect, etc.)
AHHH. Haa. LOL

stillatwork said:
From what it looks like, someone had tried to get the bike started that had no idea what they were doing.
Fucking true story.

stillatwork said:
I think this because the timing was way off, the valve tappet was loose etc. What I meant by pressure being low was that on the 450 carbs, there is a pressure screw, which increases, or decreases pressure out of the exhaust. This feels low to me, and doesn't seem to change with adjustment of the screw
LOL

WHUT?
stillatwork said:
but I am unsure.
Fucking. True. Story.

Doing a compression test tomorrow before doing anything else,
I would take a crack at waking up first.

like I said in the 3rd post before the other 15 ones of people spitting nonsense at each other, got it, thanks.
You are so welcome.

.
check the color of the gas . . if it has a yellow tint to it, the tank is rusty and/or it had jurassic goo in it from dried up gas and the new gas re-liquified the goo which will kill your engine way faster and better than starting fluid ever would . . not to sure about the oxy/acetylene though . . it might kill it a little faster.

...or maybe someone just pissed in it.

To the o.p.

Seriously.

It just might run. Engines are tough.

If you get it running, on ether or anything, make sure she gets good oil from now on.

But, it's junk.

LOL. Goddamnit I do entertain myself, and that's what's really important.

But how would I get the tasty artificial whip cream flavor at the same time then?

That's pretty much every one they ever made isn't it?

EDIT: emoticons added to ease the butthurt.

bike runs, idles, rides. checked valves, carbs, timing. thanks for the manual. some of you guys need a hobby or a woman, or something...lol

Awesome. See how that works?

Reverse psychology. Not just for crazy people.

Keep good oil in er and she'll take you where you wanna go.
