CB550 Cafe Interceptor - Gentleman's Roadster

Re: CB550F Interceptor

It was suggested on the “High Performance & Racing Forum” on the SOHC4 site, that straight runners from the carbs to the intake valves is a lot more efficient than having bends in the intake tract.

With that in mind, I ordered the CR26 carbs spaced to match the intake ports on the head. That meant I needed to make intake manifolds to mount them. Not having a welder or experience using one, I decided to bolt an adapter to the head and then use rubber intake manifolds from a Kawasaki KZ550.

Here are the adapters rough cut and drilled on the drill press.

Re: CB550F Interceptor

I'm wondering if that setup would boost the performance of the factory carbs? I would love to get a set of CR's but the wallet is a bit light ;) Do you have any internal mods to the engine? I've read your build on sohc.net but it was a while ago.

Ya, the engine has 59mm Yoshimura pistons with a slight dome so compression will be a bit higher than stock, but I haven’t done the math to quantify it. The head has also been ported and I will be installing a WebCam camshaft too.
You wouldn’t be able to run this manifold setup with the 550 carbs because the stock rack spacing is to narrow, but you could use some KZ Mikuni carbs with this spacing and improve the performance. I was originally planning on using KZ Mikuni carbs and I’ll post a picture of them for you later tonight.

Re: CB550F Interceptor

yeah I didn't know if the factory carb spacing could be adjusted some how but definitely post some pics of the mikunis you were going to use. My head is ported and I am running a 650 cam so if I can squeeze some more out with a carb switch, that would be nice.

Re: CB550F Interceptor

Love the build, great work on everything. The custom fab is awesome. I really like the way you did the front end conversion, and the way you adapted the front wheel hub to suit the front end mods. I want to do a 500/550 build in the not so distant future, gives me ideas...

Chris
Thanks. Using the stock hub really helps to make the modern forks fit in.
Well worth the extra effort.

Re: CB550F Interceptor

Just back from a Jenny Craig retreat and looking leaner and firmer that ever.

The CR26 rack slipped in perfectly.

Re: CB550F Interceptor

would the later CV version carbs work as well off of a kz or GS? just curious since they seem to have better throttle response...

I've only come across one person (Terry in Australia) that has commented on those CV carbs on his CB750.
He loves them, but they might be to big for a 550.

Re: CB550F Interceptor

That's amazing, man. I dont even know what to say really....

Re: CB550F Interceptor

Just when you think you’ve got it all sorted out, you find another obstacle.
What to do when your fuel petcock is in constant contact with the carb?

Re: CB550F Interceptor

Looks like you might be able to fashion some sort of a bung extension with a 90* bend in there to move it towards the heads.

Re: CB550F Interceptor

WOW :o !!!!!! This is Awesome! Great work Jimmy, I want to come learn how to machine parts with you. haha ;D
