CB650 and GSXR Forks or any modem forks

rustyj

Love to ride!!!
Hi Ya.
Does anyone know if I can kit a GSXR fors or any modem bike forks to my 1980 CB650??
If I can do you know what model I can take the forks from?

Any advise would be great.

AllBalls racing... Bearing kits. Neck swaps. There's a dozen ways to make any forks fit any bike. Not being a dick, but search the forum a bit. There are tons of write ups and projects that show how to do it in great detail.

There is no easy way. You will have to machine and/or weld something. No plug and play options here. That said, get forks with the stem height long enough and axle diameter in the same ballpark. No idea wich one would fit those requirements tho.. in the 1-800 help section are axle/fork diameter lists.

Modern USD forks will be substantially shorter than the stock forks
I have a pair of 2002 GSXR 750 forks and they are exact same length as CB360.
Later models are approximately the same length but with more technology inside.
Kawasaki had some issues with 636 forks cracking at the bottom in 2006 (most people have seen the picture of guy doing stoppie and fork breaking)
Don't know about Honda, Yamaha are about same as Suzuki

GSXR1100 circa 92-95 are the longest USD forks out there IIRC. They're about 2 inches longer than the same year 750 forks.

They will still be shorter than what you have now, however.

And oh yeah - this guy....

Yeo, I've seen a couple leaking oil and cracked but that's the only one fail
The bottoms are screwed on, think the thread was cut too deep or too long so not supported and a stress point

Thanks for all your replies I did not expect this kind of response.
I thought I would check in a week later and only fin one and maybe to replies.

I will ask my local bike shop mechanic if he knows what my best option will be, I am also going ot a classic and custom bike show this weekend and should get an idea at the show.
Thanks again for all your replies.

http://cognitomoto.com/collections/gsxr-conversion-parts

I am not associated with this company

They specialize in GSXR front end conversions for older Japanese bikes. You'll need to purchase a GSXR front end (triples, forks, axle, etc). Cognito Moto sells the steering stems for the conversion, as well as the steering head/neck bearings. You can also buy the new bearings from All Balls which offers a conversion chart, telling you exactly what you need.

Take the triple to a shop and get the OEM GSXR stem pressed out, and the new Cognito stem pressed in. Install new bearings and it should be a basic bolt-on after that.

As for wheels, you can still use a OEM GSX wheel - or if you want to go spoked, Cognito sells a custom made front hub designed to but the GSXR forks (I think it goes for $350 or so), using the OEM front axle.

Alternatively, they sell a direct bolt-on kit. They will source all the parts and send it to you as a bolt-on pre-packaged item, laced wheel and all. I think they charge $2000 for it.

That's essentially it in a nutshell. I've been looking at the same conversion so I've done my research. I'm just waiting for a really desperate person selling their GSXR front end for cheap.

Hope that helps

Lewis

Yup, my current build ends up just over half that. But there's a lot of time designing, machining and sourcing going into that, so it's not that outrageous a price.
