CThor's 1972 CB450 (Getting Close!)

CThor

Been Around the Block
Hey just picked this up today and can't wait to get started on it. It has been sitting for awhile so first order of business will be getting it running, then move onto cleaning it up. I drove 4 hours each way to get it. It has 12k miles, and overall is in pretty good condition. I picked it up for $400. I going to start with cleaning the carbs up and replacing the fuel lines since they are broken and it also needs a battery.

Here's my project from this last summer which isn't quite all the way done yet. 07 Honda Ruckus with a 150cc motor swap and stretched 7 inches and many other mods as well.

Re: CThor's CB450

Saw one of those Ruckus machines at the dealership. Look nice. Can't wait to see the progress on the 450.

Re: CThor's CB450

This bike was what inspired me to build one of these. I have a friend that has a performance shop and I'm hoping he can help out to make me an exhaust somewhat like the one on this bike. Thats a ways down the road though. Ha ha

Re: CThor's CB450

Not a bad bike to be inspired by : )

The long drive seems like it payed off. The 450 looks like it is in great shape. look forward to seeing the progress.

Cheers

I, too, like that bike! ;)

Re: CThor's CB450

God, I never thought I'd say this but... I like that scooter man! ;D Like the Battle Scooter graphic too. If a scooter can look mean, that one does it! Can't wait to see what you do with the 450!

Re: CThor's CB450

Thanks for the scooter comment... ;D I'm hoping I can figure this all out. This will be my first attempt at building something like this. As far as the scooter, most of it was bolt on stuff besides having to rewire the whole thing for the new motor and electronics. Hopefully some of that will help out on this build. I need to get my garage cleaned up a little more and fire up the heater to work on it. I'm anxious to see if I can get it running fairly quick so that is out of the way.

Re: CThor's CB450

Just found your build thread! Your bike looks amazingly clean and it looks like you got a pretty good deal as well. Keep me updated with everything!

P.S. I just read your other thread about your bike not starting. Some guy posted that his bike was stuck in 5th gear and it turned out to be a battery related. I don't know how that correlates but it looks like a possible solution to my bike not being able to get into 3rd, 4th, and 5th gear.

See you around!

Re: CThor's CB450

Ya my starting issue was the starter switch wasn't making good contact and I cleaned up the ground on the frame. Now that I got my new seat I can get my new battery. The battery I was using was bad and wasn't holding a charge. I did get it to where it was trying to start, but haven't yet found out for sure if its getting spark.

Re: CThor's CB450

Good stuff! Are you going to be repainting the frame? At first I wasn't going to, but I figured I'd just do it so it'll last. Clean up as much rust as I can too! The electric harness looks too complicated though.

What color are you going to paint the tank and seat?

Re: CThor's CB450

Ya I think I'll tear it down and paint it. I'm planning on gloss black for the tank and seat. The wiring harness isn't really that complicated. Its looks like it from my picture but all you do up there is match up colors.

Re: CThor's CB450

Well I spent a little time today cleaning up the rims and a few other parts that I could clean up with some steel wool. I couldn't believe how shiny the wheels are now after just using some WD-40 and steel wool. I was planning on painting the wheels black, but after seeing them how they are now I may just paint the spokes and hub and leave the polished lip.

Re: CThor's CB450

Nothing like a little WD40 and #0000 steel wool to make you smile! The more oil and crud on the bike, the better protected the chrome is ;)

Re: CThor's CB450

Well I got the front brake working again ;D I also got my new throttle cable on and put my carbs back on. I got a new clutch cable too but can't get the screws out of the cover to change that out yet. :-\ I also got my new headlight ears in the same package. Now that the carbs are back on, I need to go pick up my battery and see if I can get it running before I tear it all apart to strip and paint the frame.

I keep forgetting that you are only half way through your winter. Spring is fast approaching for me. It has been amazing riding weather all week. Unfortunately I left the keys to my bike at my house 2 1/2 hours away. I seriously considered hotwiring the thing. I'm such a damba$$!

Re: CThor's CB450

Ya this week has been close to 40 degrees, give or take a few. So thats warm here and I've been out in the garage with the door open working on it when I can. Too cold to do any of the painting I want to do though. Hopefully I can have everything done except painting stuff by the time its warm enough. I found a cl exhaust I was looking for, only 25 bucks but its missing the shields. Also there is one on ebay that is in really good shape. I put a bid in on that one today. I'll prob pick up the other one too if I decide to do a custom exhaust and just use the headers off it.
