DO THE TON Mama Tried IV Oct 2013 - Barber Vintage Festival

in 2011 the ride left from the museum parking lot. We all got in and out pretty quickly. Not sure if it was on Friday though. That may be a better place to leave from if anyone is interested. The ride itself was a cluster fark though.

I would rather have a ride going in to the show. Leave from Kiley's place and let the locals show us(northerners) some fun early morning Alabama riding. Hint, hint......

Okay guys and gals, been deliberating with the congress of DTT, etc, and I've got to post up a few things for you guys to mull over. In the past, the Barbers get together has been open to all of the Do The Ton folks. Years ago when it started, we had about 20 guys camping in the yard, drinking beer, and having a good time. The next year the number grew to 65-70. Last year we had well over 100. I'm just a single guy that enjoys hanging out with good friends and enjoying the company of people that don't make me crazy. There were a few things that came up last year that stressed me out, and I wanted to put it out here for all of you so that you know where I stand. There were a lot of random people that showed up that weren't affiliated with the site last year. That would be fine under normal circumstances because I enjoy meeting new people. Considering the magnitude that Mama Tried has grown to though, I've got to close off the gathering to people that aren't a part of our group or family of our group. I have a small 8 acre patch and really about 3 of them are usable, and a single dirt driveway (driveway of doom!). The traffic coming in and out of here gets really bad, and adding in random people doesn't make things easy on any of us. When people are showing up that I've never met and I don't know their names there is a problem from a security standpoint. I wish that the world were a place that we could all trust everyone all of the time, but it just isn't. I trust the DTT community. I have never received anything but grace from you guys and we all look out for one another. Unfortunately I am not a business and I have to look out for myself and my family as far as that kind of thing goes.

The camping spots are full. I have talked to a lot of you about coming via PM, etc. and as it stands there are already more campers than we have had before staying here. We will still be having the Saturday night party, and of course all of you guys are welcome here for that. We can also offer some other ideas as far as places to stay aside from here. I really appreciate all of your understanding on all of this, I guess I've just gotten "too big for my britches" as grandma used to say.

Couple of more things to keep in mind. I would really appreciate if you guys could bring tools with you when you come. Our bikes are old and they break, and will ultimately need fixed. I have tools, but only a couple of each. Last year the shop got into a lot of disarray post barbers. I don't mind people using my tools to fix things, but I have a standing policy of please if it gets used, put it back where you got it when you are done. This keeps things organized and keeps me from having to spend a week putting things back together. Bringing our own tools helps alleviate that because we have more than one of everything to share.

We are going to be locking up every morning and won't be unlocking until we get back from the park each night. This is just a security issue, but we are going to try and keep things secure for us and those of us that have things stored inside while we are gone. My wife or I don't feel comfortable leaving things unlocked during the day. It has taken me a long time to build up what I own and don't want it to walk off!

My wife and the other ladies will be riding this year, so we won't have vehicular transportation to and from the track. We can work out how to get folks there, but we personally will not have a car. Just something to think about.

Everybody bring beer and liquor. That is important.

Otherwise when things come up, I will post them here. I hate to have to address things like this, but as the event grows, we have to adapt. There is talk of renting an area for the weekend in future years so that we can fit everyone and that is a real possibility. Just got to keep it realistic for now and I don't want anyone to feel left out because that is not at all how it is. Just have to keep all of this stuff in mind.

Otherwise, this year will be a blast!

hey man , I am with u ,and i TOTALLY AGREE WITH YOURE SECURITY PRECAUTIONS!!!I too wish it weren't such a morally lacking society, when i was a kid i was a total hood rat,but a good wife and 4 critters later,i totally feel the karmic sting of paying restitution when my family gets hit with theft!!,thank the LORD my kids & wifey have been safe, wish i could say the same for my stuff that walked off,&how much more painful it is when it SOMEONE YOU DIG!!!i love bikes and meeting good folks but you are right!!unfortunately this world is lacking in MORAL FIBER!! if you need security, let me know,I've worked event staff and fancy myself a bit of a protector of sorts, hit me up if theres anything i can do to help out,and i don't even need a place to crash I'm set!!! sept my bikes down,I REALLY HOPE SHES BACK ON THE TAR BY OCT!! :'(

It's inevitable that something this good is going to grow as the word gets around. Hanging out, helping each other, and building the bikes is what it is all about for many of us. I tip my hat to you for the hospitality and generosity you've offered, sir! The gig at your place has become an icon in my mind of how things ought to be! It would be great if we could organize similar gatherings at other events around the country. It takes a certain dynamic to make it work!

Finding another space may be a good idea. Your garage makes a big part of what is special, so how to transplant that aspect to another site could be the challenge. Still, if there was a vacant fairgrounds, Legion site, Optimist park or something nearby, it could be pretty good to rent it out for the weekend. I am sure lots of us would be willing to chip in!

That's exactly right my friend. For now it all stays as it had in years past. Just thinking ahead. We shall see what happens. And you're right, that's what it is all about.

Thanks for the heads up and invitation to the gathering. If need be I will have a car there so I can help pick up or transport people to cut down on the cluster.

Kiley, ditto on the kudos to you and your gracious hosting of all these friends and strangers. I look forward to meeting all of you. My wife and I with two more riding friends will be there and will probably be able to provide some transportation. Is it legal to haul around drunk people in the back of a pickup?

Well irony, I live in Mount Olive I just thought Gardendale was more general, Because most people dunno of Mount Olive. Do you have any spare parts such as specifically a set of gauges tach/speedo, 469 through 77-ish CB 750 K I think cb550 would work as well?
theres a good chance on the parts let us look

Ahem.......

Speaking of wives driving trucks, mine won't be this year.
I know there will be a great wailing, rending of garments, and gnashing of teeth, but Kelly won't be able to come this year. :'(

One of us has to stay to take care of my Mom, and she was gracious enough to volunteer. So I get to hang out with you guys and de-stress. 8)

I understand Kanticoy's reservations, and agree that the volume of participants has exceeded his facility. It is a shame, because the memories of past years gatherings at his home are some of my favorites. ;)

Mike, it's sad that Kelly won't be at Barbers - I've told my wife about both of you. Better luck next year I suppose.....

And best wishes to your mom.

Thanks Mike. And trust me, it isn't light-heartedly that the situation is taken. I hate having to be responsible about stuff like this. I really wish that I had 100 acres and a pavilion. And the GTG will go on my friends. It just has to be mandated a little more. If not, we are all going to end up in a pickle.
