New project :D

So yesterday a non-running 1982 Silverwing popped on Craigslist 20 miles away with the title in his name and tags expired last year.

His asking price was $100 so of course I texted. He said he already had someone that would be there the next day to get it >:( argh!!!

I knew I'd risk pissing him off and I only had one chance to change his mind... this is our short exchange:

Good deal. The CXs can be cool bikes when done right. I know there is a "triple bypass" procedure that typically needs to be done with these motors, which involves pulling the motor and addressing a few items that are known to fail - cam chain tensioner, stator and mechanical camshaft seal. There are a few guys on here who work on these bikes a lot who will be able to tell you more about it and whether or not you'll want/need to do it. Here's a page I found on the procedure and whats involved.

Thinking cafe but gonna check advCo's link and see what's involved just to get it healthy again.

I already miss my cx500...I still have a spare motor I'm planning on rebuilding. Depending on the mileage and the care taken on it it may not need a triple yet. Mine was an 82 with 13000, didn't have to do a thing to the motor. The 81 though.....needs the triple. Motofactions got good info, also their is a cx500 forum you should dig into I'm guessing there's a few guys from here over their also. I liked working on the cx, I thought it was pretty easy, so easy I fact I got a gl1000 to replace it...cafe type project. Good luck, look forward to seing your build.

And thanks for the links and advice cxman and advCo, looks like I have some research to do.

A little progress today just checking wiring, turn signals, horns, brake lights and all that works.

do the "main fuse upgrade " before you go to far less than 10 bucks and it will save you a world of grief

also make sure you pull the plugs and put a it of oil in each cylinmder

before you start spinning the motor over

the cam runs on the bare aluminum block the surfaces are dry from it sitting so crank the motor in 20 second cycles with 2 minutes

in between till the oil light goes out then do 4-5 more 20 second cycles to make sure oil is pumped everwhere

then you can put the plugs back

Good negotiating skills. Cant beat a motorcycle for $125. Previous owner could've junked it for more. I'm honestly not a fan of CX's ONLY because it's shaft driven. There's something about a chain drive that looks so appealing. Will be watching this thread.

Was going to adjust chain at lunch today but it was raining, will post an update on that soon.

Since it was raining at lunch I put the crash bars in the sand blaster.

I did take a look at the beer/cat box, anyone know how to take it off without a hammer or sawsall? I got the bolts in front but these in the rear at the helmet locks are getting me. Got the outside nuts loose but they're trapped by the helmet locks, the inside nuts won't turn but I did spray them with penetrating fluid to try later, and the whole rear box unit completely surrounds the rear frame rails for several inches and there are no bolts up under the fender to get at. These two nuts (on each side) are all there is to wrench on and I don't really wanna break the helmet lock so I didn't try to force it around:

to release the top box simply unlock both helmet locks them psh the lock bars upward till the lock box pops and you can then lift it off

you dont need any tools or to unbolt anything

if you go here you can download the gl500 owners manual it has all the info you need the lock box and seat quick change and the lock box has a high an low top

Popped off just like you said cxman, that's pretty cool and easy as pie. It even still has the original tool kit there in the back.
