Ground Resistance

Re: Ground Resistance: Engine In

i love the idea of a BRIGHT in your face color just after you shoot it rough it up and keep the worn look going! love the touches with the engraving... have you thought abouit running all your wires exposed as well? just use wire ties to keep them all tight and then drill twist them prior to adding them on the bike to keep it all nice and tight

Re: Ground Resistance: Engine In

Dear christ Daniel... This bike is beyond fucking cool. I havent been able to get online (other than on my phone, with no pics) and check out DTT much lately. I glad I did now though. I need to come to TX and see this beast in person. I think thats the only way anyone could really appreciate it.

Oh, and you need a pre photo shoot when shes ready.

Re: Ground Resistance: Engine In

Matt, I still have to get some supplies together before I'm anywhere near wiring, but I think a GTG is in order (and soon).

I love the bio-hazard emblem. I think it would look sick on the little tank behind the seat once I finish the locking mechanism, and get it painted.

Joe, twisted exposed wires huh. That is very doable, and trick as hell.

Thanks for the kind words all around fellas. And Mike, I did something with you in mind. I couldn't paint because of the weather yesterday, so I practiced engraving on some aluminum stock. I just ground a circle on the belt sander, and grabbed my gravers.

Not bad considering it is freehand with no layout. More practice is needed for sure, but I'm getting better.

You guys rock, as always. I know I would have mothballed this thing a long time ago if it wasn't for all the input I get from all of you. I can't thank you enough.

Re: Ground Resistance: Engine In

Holt shit man.. You blow me away everytime I open this thread.....jerk!

j/k.... hehe

Re: Ground Resistance: Engine In

Dude I think you've found your calling with that engraving you got going there. Just beautiful.

Re: Ground Resistance: Engine In

Thanks you two. I'm having a blast with it.

Louie, the gravers are made from old HSS steel drills. Basically they are just micro-chisels. I'm still learning the best angles for the different cuts, but there isn't a lot of info out there. Most people use air assisted engravers, but I'd have to spend more on a rig then I have in my whole bike. As my chisel making improves, I'm finding it easier to cut the metal.

Re: Ground Resistance: Engine In

That engraved sugar skull is tits my friend. Youre one talented asshole. Haha

Re: Ground Resistance: Engine In

Have you considered making belt buckles, for bike money?

Re: Ground Resistance: Engine In

Yes! Amazing. And you know, there are MUCH cheaper alternatives that those badass high dollar rotary files. Not to threadjack, but you will appreciate this because of the "sometimes more advanced and modern isn't better". This guy blows my mind. I will also have to find some shots that I have from a local guy here that does smelting and then carving of statues and stuff out of aluminum. He melts down random car parts, etc, then pours them into blocks. Then he makes figurines and statues from the block. They are insane. But anyway, here's some inspiration. Love what you're doing bro.

And the sugar skull is sweet, but personally, I prefer the spade's design....reminds me A LOT of Edward Gorey's work.

Re: Ground Resistance: Engine In

holy shit. your engraving is killer. i know youre still learning, but already it looks crazy. you should def think of some things to produce for sale. belt buckles, top triple nut, who knows, but keep it up.

Re: Ground Resistance: Engine In

I have to concur, not many dudes out there doing that kind of work for bikes. The last one I knew of (though I'm sure they are still out there) was the guy that chiseled Indian Larry's bikes....

If you're up for a commission I've got a project for you.
PM if you're interested....

ps: Kiley....is there anything you DON'T know about? You're one of my heros mate....

Re: Ground Resistance: Engine In

Joe, glad you approve brother. The skull should have been laid out better, but I didn't have a pen with a fine enough point. I'm happy with it but it could have been better with some planning.

4eyes, I do plan on doing a buckle for my tire belt when I get around to it.

Kiley, bad ass video, but I'm not giving up my lathe. :)
I get the point with the low tech though. The tools I've been researching are micro air hammers that pneumatically drive a graver without so much wear on the hand. The cheapest I have found are $600ish and foot controlled. They don't produce as clean of a line, but they will chew into knife blades, where I'm struggling through aluminum.

Who knows I might throw some stuff on Ebay or Etsi when I get a little better, but for now I'm having fun just learning a new skill.

Swag, I saw the last Indian Larry build off episode a couple of days ago. That style is relatively pretty easy. Certainly every guy that does it is not a master like that guy, but he is using the high speed rotary tips. You can do simple relief with a decent setup, but high precision western bright cutting in chrome-ally takes a palm graver. That is all a quality gun engraver uses.

And yes, Kiley is like the wikipedia of all things cool and unique.

Thanks for the interest gents. Guys that get it, that's why I love it here.

Re: Ground Resistance: Engine In

Not to worry mate, I'll check that PM later...gotta got kill some Zombies (theme party)
but I used to do a lot of micro pneumatics design, fairly simple stuff.....
good tooling isn't nearly as hard to get into if you can make it. I'll give you the lowdown...

That bow lathe video is amazing. So is the bike - but - some fancy footwork there!

Putting boot to ass...

Dude if you can home roll an airgraver, then you are a god among ants. That is most badass.

My Mom and Dad were back in Morocco a couple years ago (we lived there for a couple of years when I was a preschooler) and saw the bow lathe guy. Mom has a necklace piece that he made. Pretty amazing stuff.
