How do I remove badge mounts?

You can just use JB weld or filler and then sand them back. No need to remove the mounting tab

+1. Spot welded,you'll rip holes in the tank.

Filled them in on my CM400 with body filler, had to build it out a little and blend in because they weren't flush.

Can you use solder to smooth this off? I know the old body men used to use lead as filler, a better alternative to bondo.

Wouldn't carry on with that Rich. I tried removing them like you did and it tore a few holes in the actual tank...luckily it was a spare one! ;D

Do you need them gone?....Is filling them in against the look you are going for?

I have in the past left them in place and they were a pain in the ass to cover, as they were just a bit proud of the surrounding surface. I guess I'll leave them in place!

If you really have to remove them, then do it carefully with a grinder on the spot welds, pulling them off will leave holes.

You can carefully grind them down to reduce their height.
So you can get what ever filler you decide to use to stick to
the badge mount. Being so close to the same height as the
tank itself I know how much of a pain it is to get it smooth.

Once I've got the paint stripped I'll go at it gently with a flap wheel on the side that I already started mucking around with and fill the other side in.

I hit them with a belt sander if they are a bit proud of the tank surface, then fill them with body filler. I never try to remove them, although I have seen them be removed by grinding where the spot welds are.

Thanks, that's a pretty good idea, and since I use my belt sander about once every time I have to refinish a hardwood floor, it probably wouldn't mind being used

There is not good reason whatever for not using Bondo.

Solder/lead as a body filler is from the 60's. WAAAY better materials for the job now.

I'll modify that statement slightly. If you were going to metal plate the tank, you would use a solder type of filler.

notlob had the answer. Grind the spot welds and then fill the indentation.

I only have a four inch grinder and a Dremel - I think that for me, belt sander is the way to go.

What would you use to grind the spot welds off? I'm sure the Dremel would get there...eventually...
