Ozark Mtn Scramble Build - CB350

This is the bike I decided to build for this yrs scramble, a 3 day ride through the back roads of the Ozark mtns in Arkansas. Rules state a 1k max on bike and build so I will spend most of the money ($250 for bike in 2001) for sprockets/chain , cables , battery , tires , etc. I have built several 350's and when I set up on something I usually build 2 or 3 of them so I have some parts on hand and the jigs and fixtures for most of the stuff I will need for this build. I will be building most all of the fasteners, axles, swingarm bolt, chain adjuster and that type stuff from aluminum and stainless, fitting a frontend from an R5, rebuilding the wheels and bracing the frame. Jarred had already built the fenders, seat, and fairing from carbon fibre and was starting on the tank when we started thinking alloy so we may end up with a set of each and see which looks the part. Gauges will be made from aluminum with carbon faces and stainless numbers and indicator marks. Carbs have been threaded and velo stacks made to thread on so we don't have to worry with them rattling loose. I will add some more pics as the parts get made. We enjoy the site and have seen some bad ass bikes being built on here.

Wow, now that's custom. Just curious, why go through so much trouble to machine these relatively inexpensive parts? Can you really make a better product than OEM or are you doing it just because you can?

Really looking forward to seeing the final product. The carbon fiber bodywork should look awesome.

That is my dad, and the other half of Slipstream Cycle Works. Finally convinced him to do a build thread.


The fasteners and such will function the same as stock, but, they look so much better.
 
Getting the machine work on the hubs done. I've done this on a couple of other projects now, and it really looks sharp when finished.

This will be the seat, need a trim, sanding, and a few coats of clear.

Glad to see this one coming together Mark! You and Jarred will probably be the best looking bikes that show up. Period.

I may need to hit you guys up for a light weight fender on my kz440 build. Do you guys have any if fiberglass? I doubt I have the scratch to float a CF route on a Scramble budget.

Also, have you started a build on yours yet Jarred?

May seen like a lot of work to some building fasteners when you can buy them cheap but when they start coming together I think you will see why we do. Derrick, I am sure we can work out something on a fender, man I let some guy talk me out of the superhawks and CL I got from you and have been kicking myself every since. If you ever get down here give me a shout and come by the shop. Jarred bought a wild DOHC 750 project down at Barber and I can see that being his bike for the ride but he hasn't said for sure. Here are some chain adjusters I have close, wont do final polish on anything until bike is put together a time or two to see what needs changed

I have not. The plan is to get to it after the show in Dania Beach at the end of January. Until then, I'll be pretty busy building up stock to take down there.
 
Bummer on the 305's. I still wish I had them, but who knows how long it would take before I would be able to even get started on one of them. I definitely need to make a trip over there and check out your operation. Maybe a shake down run on the kz440 would be a good excuse.

Also, top notch work as usual.
 
Will be running some clip on's I picked up for 15 bucks from the local CA 77 guru and if the cables need to be cut down I will be using these cable ends I had made some extra's of on one of my other projects. Not to hard to make and they do set the bike apart.

A few more parts coming together, rear brake stay and hardware and steering damper knob. I think I will glass bead knob with fine glass in milled out pockets and polish the rest then maybe a coat of clear. Will also be fitting a set of our new folding rearsets on this bike. I hope to have most of the small stuff done by next weekend so I can mock up the bike and see what needs changed, due to the 1k limit on cash spent I have painted the rims and went back with chrome spokes, I really wanted to go flanged alloy rims but the painted ones saved a lot of $ and when assembled with the chrome spokes and machined hubs really look the part.

Mike's XS has some flanged aluminum rims that are fairly inexpensive for a pair. You can use the stock spokes with them as well to save a bit more cash. Food for thought.
 
whats up captain? I have some XS wheels at the shop and though about using them but with this little bike I thought I would stay with the smaller wheels, I think the XS wheels are going to make their way on a bike soon though as I picked up a nice GT 750 front hub at Barber and I am dying to get it onto something, maybe a 350 F. Been trying to get this computer to load some pics tonight and it don't want to. Watched the youtube vids of the 400 last night, man that is a cool bike but that freaking seat would kill my ass.
