Points won't open

snmavridis

Gettin my life together. One bolt. At a time.
So I'm trying to set the timing on my cb550f and I replaced my points with brand new parts from dcc. When I try to turn the crankshaft to open the points, they dont move at all. am i missing something?

Have you adjusted them? Or just bolted on?
Get a factory manual, it will walk you through the correct way and order to set up points.

Hiya mate before ya get to fine adjust rotate ya motor so ya 1-4 is at F against ya engine timing mark then loosen ya left hand points screw this should let ya open ya points slightly tighten ya screw rotate ya motor so after ya T mark passes the engine timing mark see if ya points close then do the same with the 2-3 mark if they now close up and then open again then you can start looking at fine adjustment cud be a start point at least had same with my 350f

yorkie, i appreciate your post but i honestly do not follow what youre saying at all lol

There are 1 of two issues. First thing, take the points plate back off and make sure that you have the timing advancer on. This is an oblong shaft that would open and close your points. You can also twist it with your fingers and the springs should streatch.

If that there, put your points plate back on. loosen up the points from the plate by just unsnugging the phillips screws. With a flathead you stick it between the two bumps on the place and the notch on the point to move it in and out. You really need to read the manual here as it will tell you what gap you need in the point and you will check it with a gap tool, one that has like 100 different flaps on it. Once you get them right you tighten them down.

Recap, either 1 you dont have your advander or 2 you dont have them adjusted. If you dont know how to adjust try to find someone local that can help. This is something that you will end up doing once a year or so as they will run out of wack.

Yup i wasn't too clear bit like my head this mornin 8) how u doin have ya got them to open n close yet mate :P

i got them to start moving now. i didnt realize the screw that holds the points in place needs to be snug (not tight, and not loose) in order to adjust them properly. thanks guys. i used that trick with the flat head JSJamboree, that helped a bunch.
