There's fiber glass packing inside. Depending on how old the packing is, it may or may not need replaced.

Don't remove it unless you want to replace it. Replacement isn't expensive really, but sure can be dirty.

The packing will be wrapped around the baffles, and comes out with the baffles. Google "moose muffler," and you will find sources for muffler packing.

From the factory both the RD250 and RD350 did in fact have packing, the 400 did not. Lot's of guys removed the packing expecting a performance increase, or at a minimum a change in sound. Opinions on the end result vary.

Remove the screws, pull out the baffles, clean them, put them back in. It's part of basic preventative maintenance with a 2T bike. There is no packing in a RD250 muffler. Please pick up a service manual for the bike, it's all in there :)

I stand corrected too many years since I worked on one :-\

My Clymer service manual shows differently. It shows packing. I guess its a matter of whose facts you use.

Yeah, I like Clymer and Haynes manuals ok.. they always have some cool tips and tricks ... ( and generally better engrish than oem manuals)

But I count on my factory Yamaha service manual for proper specs , part numbers, etc. and recommend one be obtained by the OP.

ok im gonna pull that sucker out.cleaning it with petroleum will make the goo make go away.
ill post a pic if its packed or not :-)

when its packed im gonna put a new packing on it.

+1 --------^

oh, not 'sayin someone didn't wrap some packing in there.... who knows what po's did over the last 40 years...

that about dg´s but im not about to change the jetting of my carb...too much work.

ok here´s the story...i removed the philips screw....but the muffler wont move a bit...tried some wd 40 and some ice spray to solute the rust...any ideas how to get that sucker outta there?or is there another screw somewhere?

heat up and use a slide hammer, does the bike run ? exhaust are hot
another sure fire way to get them out is ride around with the screws removed, an they will surely fly out and land in say that deep river you were riding next to 8) or they will bounce into the oncoming lane an smash that acura windshield

i just tried to remove the chromed muffler of the header pipe...is it possible that these two are connected by a screw thread?
i tried to slip it off but it wont come off...
i cant see anything on the cmsnl explosion about some thread....

i mean the connection between part 13 and the rost of the chrome exhaust...cmsnl part list says "nut"...

If they're like the pipes on my 200 (I don't think they should be) than yes, there's a threaded collar.

ok than i get why i didnt get that sucker off...:-)

so number 13 on the explo diagram is the nut.how do you get that nut off?it has some kind of "teeth" on which probably a special tool is needed...
