Slowly going from the street to the track..but right now i want to punch babies!

Re: Slowly going from the street to the track.....well maybe

If you go to my website www.OHIOCAFERACERS.com under the tech tips section is a fork size pdf lookup....but I believe it was the 1972 SL350. May have been all years...not sure....but definately 72.

You can see the 2 bolts in the lower clamp in this picture....just in front of the steering damper.

As for the double pinch bolt. The lower triple clamp has 2 bolts on each side of the clamp that tightens down on the fork tube. Most all other 35mm lower clamps only have 1 bolt. The 2 bolt lower clamp allows for more clamp pressure on the fork tube which helps stop twisting or movement of the fork tube in the clamp. These old hondas under race conditions twist and contort like crazy....anything you can do to eliminate some of it helps.

I did a complete build thread over on the wera board of the bike above....feel free to check it out....tons of useful info.

Hope this helps.

Re: Slowly going from the street to the track.....well maybe

i was looking at the parts phish at bikebandit and see that they list that the SL350 had the 4 bold lowers but everyone that i see on ebay is a 2 bold lower.
but every XL350 i see on ebay is the 4 bolt lower...
will the geometry of the XL work? will they bolt on like the SL would?

Re: Slowly going from the street to the track.....well maybe

XL350 Tree is what I tried first too. The spacing between the fork is signfigantly less, which may or may not interfere with your hub/brake setup. I'd say if you're planning on running disk brakes, it wouldn't work (which is what I was doing). I can take some exact measurements of the XL trees I have if you want.

bob.

Re: Slowly going from the street to the track.....well maybe

my plan is to run a gt750 drum.
how much less is the spacing on the XL?

Re: Slowly going from the street to the track.....well maybe

I can take a measurement first thing tomorrow. Dark here now and don't have lights hooked up in the garage yet...

Re: Slowly going from the street to the track.....well maybe

well i found out that the GT750 drum is a fair bit to wide for the XL triples.
i might run a CB450 front drum to get me started and use the GT750 drum latter

used some RTV on the rip in the diaphragm....
i really feel ghetto not sure how well it will work

so about the idea of going racing.....
really felt bad cutting up a street bike to race as i would really only be using a few of the street parts.
so i got a really cheap frame and motor. the motor was locked from sitting but i got it free with some PB and a block of wood. goal is to rebuild the motor and use it to race.
needs
-pistons stock type.
-slipper cam tensioner
-not sure if ill be able to spend the money on a PVL or just run a total loss to get going

the frame is a 69.

Re: Slowly going from the street to the track.....well maybe

ordering some parts to get the "new" motor running
also getting the triples sorted out to mount the cb750f forks

Re: Slowly going from the street to the track.....well maybe

much to my surprise the cylinders in the new motor are in good shape and should just need a hone or maybe a .25 over.
on the hunt for some OEM pistons.

Re: Slowly going from the street to the track.....well maybe

well it seems like the RTV on the carb diaphragms is going to work......

looking forward to the warmer weather and riding the cb350 around.
i took my friends out last night and ill tell you this......60mph in 8*F temps is really freaking cold....but fun

Re: Slowly going from the street to the track.....well maybe

well got the carbs back on and timed the motor
only runs on one cylinder.....

did a compression test.
90 in one and 125 in the other......

freaking suck.

looks like i need a tensioner and .25mm over pistons

Re: Slowly going from the street to the track.....well maybe

going to try and find someone upstate that can bore my cylinders so i can know it i need .25 or .50 over

also have some parts on the way
CB450 wheel and drum
XL350 triple
R1 rearsets

im thinking about starting with the CB450 drum instead of the GT750 but im really not sure

Re: Slowly going from the street to the track.....well maybe

you want to look at a new cam chain too if the tensioner is that bad, the stretch will have retarded your cam timing enough to rob low end torque by a noticeable amount. unless you're slotting and re-degreeing the cam sprocket, then a new cam chain will help a lot

Re: Slowly going from the street to the track.....well maybe

oh yes she will need a new cam chain too.

UUUmmmmm piston slap.....guess i really do need to get new pistons.....
i had a spare jug that has a good standard bore and i wanted to just re ring these pistons and go but i dont think thats really all that good of an idea after i cleaned up the pistons.....kinda sucks....

havent seen one of these before...i think its cool

got the triple. still waiting to see how the 450 drum works.
the XL triple is to narrow for the gt750 drum

Re: Slowly going from the street to the track.....well maybe

Got my 450 drum in yesterday.
the axle is to wide to fit the XL trees.
anyone know id the CB350 and XL350 axles are the same?
i figure i need and axle that fits the trees and then machine the drum down a bit to fit.....sound about right?

Re: Slowly going from the street to the track.....well maybe

still messing with the drums to see how to make one work.

put plates on the bike the other day.
looking forward to a few street miles this spring

waiting on pistons and gaskets to get her back on the road
