This is the start of my project. The first phase will be to make some changes and hopefully ride the thing this summer. Then, next winter I'll take er down to bare bones and make it like new again. I should have a few more funds and more time next year. So right now I don't consider this a very big project. I'm currently looking for a new tank and a cafe seat. Also, I would like some clip ons. I'm not going to run mufflers. I plan to weld some extension pipes and they'll be wrapped with fiberglass. I also need to order some head light ears, but first I need a new headlight bucket. Things are going to go slow for a while. I probably won't do too much until after the first of the year. This will be my first attempt at photos.

I was waiting for someone to hit him up for those when he said he didn't want them. Don't let them go too cheap guy some good funds for your project in those if your SURE yu dont want them. Good start.

Looks like a fun project. Not to get off topic, but how would you guys go about cleaning those pipes? Beadblast and paint, powdercoat or repaint?

sorry man, I've already cut the pipes. You can't see it in the photo but something had happened to the top one. Right at the muffler it had been bent out and the bolt at the rear mount bracket was broke. The muffler was bent about two inches out away from the bracket. However, excluding bad chrome, the rest of the pipes are good. I plan to use muratic acid to remove the chrome then give them a coat of high temp paint. Then I'll probably wrap them with fiberglass wrap.

I'f you're going to do that, I've had good luck with the following...

1.) Wire brush the pipes like crazy. I use a steel wire brush on my bench grinder, but a hand brush will do as well.

2.) sand the pipes by hand with 400 grit

3.) wire with acetone and let sit for an hour or so. DO NOT TOUCH THEM AGAIN WITH YOUR HANDS; USER RUBBER GLOVES

4.) Paint with high temp VHT exhaust paint. I personally only use VHT for exhaust and calipers.

5.) Once dry, wrap them with the pipe wrap. I've used both the wet-out method and the dry method and like the wet method better.

6.) fire up the bike and let it smoke like crazy for a while :)

Looks like a good start to the project. I like how you kept the two-up seat. Personally, I'd shave it down a couple inches to get a lower profile, but well done on the good start.

Here is my CB360 build. Hopefully, you'll get some ideas...

Chris, You have a great web site! It is full of information. Love your bike and Everything you did!!!! I see you used the Benelli tank. I love these as well. I've had my eye on them but I don't have the funds now. Your mounting idea might come in handy if I go that route later. Anyhow, where did you find the girls?? Just kidding. BTW, I think I'll use your method on the pipes. Thanks, Troy

troy keep the pics coming brther! looks great! did you use a spring compressor to pull the shocks apart?

You don't need a spring compressor to split the springs from the dampers--just a kung-fu grip and a lot of cursing.

--Chris

JRK, Kris is correct. To remove the springs it took two of us. I compressed while my son took a screwdriver and popped out the keepers. It does take some ass though and putting it back together was a good bit harder.
Without any money I've been messing around. I removed the speedometer and cut the stock mounting bracket to make a bracket for the tach. With only one mounting point it may vibrate too much. I don't know?? I still need to grind off the mounting stud because it is way too long. I do plan to mount it in rubber. Once I decide where I'm going to mount it, I'll need to grind off un-needed mounting points. Anyway, Since I'm not going to run a speedometer should I seal the point where the cable used to go into the front hub? If I do use this bracket I can mount the tach in a few different positions. Let me know what you guys think. BTW, I couldn't stand looking at those HIGH bars any longer!!! I turned them down. Hope the upside down bars don't drive too many people crazy! I'm holding out for some clip ons.

Also, I may need a new tach. This one doesn't quite work right. When the bike was running the tach acted like something was on a bind inside and it would get stuck ( say at 1000 or two thousand RPMs). It also has a few small dings.
Well, this is my first F-up. I cut into the frame. LOL... I'm pretty good at closing holes however.

And here is a bit of molestation by the PO. Thank god he didn't have the bike too long! This is the only bit of wiring he fixed that I can find. everything else is still in the factory loom.

I still have a lot of cleaning and polishing, sanding and painting. BTW , JRK, I like your cheap fix for the spokes. I was planning on painting mine until next year when I can get new ones or sand blast and paint these. However, for now I don't want to paint my hubs. They are in really good condition. Do you have any other cosmetic spoke fixes?? Troy

Here is a little more progress. I plan to paint the pipes black and wrap them in white fiberglass. I'll leave 3-4" of the pipes stick out. I'm not sure what to do with the heat shield. I think it would look killer in new chrome. Also, the photos above with the tach are a little crooked. The Tach is not bolted down. I think I've decided to mount it to the right. I've finished the mount, but it needs sanded and painted. I'll post up a photo.

yo man that is SICK!!! you have a few options... here is my harley whe i first did that... i wrapped the pipes in white and shot it black then i cut my own heat shields to work for where i wnated them... show those in black and taped off a design... just to give you an idea... here is what that looked like (granted this is a HD)

Hey, cool bike! Don't ditch those pipes .. they're fantastic.
It bugs me that there are so few old CL and CB twins in Australia .. plenty of fours .. Ahh well, I'm a Yamaha man .. but there aren't many XS650's here either. D'oh!
Good going on the build mate!
Regards,
Ben

so your going the complete opposite direction with a thumper, eh ben? :D

the CL is looking great! its hard as hell sometimes to get the higher pipe to lay flat. i think it would look killer with a silver powdercoat over black pipes, or whatever color you are going to paint your tank/ass stop.

Thanks for all the comments guys. Ideas are much appreciated! JRK, I love the Harley and the Dice on the heat shields. Very cool idea.

Chris, sorry I missed the part about the seat the first time, but not too sure what I'm going to do for a seat. This one is not in very good shape and it will all depend on what I use for a tank. I agree though, the stock seats are huge. I think I'd like to switch it all around and have the tank about the size of the seat and the seat the size of the tank . So I'm looking for a tank. Like I said I really like the bigger tanks and would like to find a cheap tank to mess around with. Just don't know which one. When I started this project I wanted a much lighter bike and vowed not to replace anything with something heavier, however, the tank may have to be the exception. But I really do like the stripped down racer look.
The pipes aren't welded yet. When I hold them in place I can get them a little straighter, so I'll have to be carefull when I tack them up. At first I wanted to hide the joint under the mounting bracket but they are too fat. So I just moved the joint forward. It will be covered up with fiberglass anyway. Take care guys, Your comments are greatly appreciated!

A little update. I cleaned the carbs today and found that one of the floats was getting caught on the gasket. I couldn't stand it any longer and wanted to hear the new pipes. I threw a (dead)batttery back in and put the tank back on. I pushed it out of the family room and out into the cold, cold garage. One kick and she rips. I thought you all might like a little video. Sorry for the shitty footage, but you can get the idea. I think it sounds like she's screaming, " rip me to 10,000 rpms and don't stop till I tell ya'."
Anyhow, she's running lean and I will have to change the jets, but I'm lovin' it! By the way I've named her Daniella.

I just purchased this
83e4_11.jpg

I think I got a pretty good deal at $51.00 . Now I need a tank. I really like the Benelli tank like the one ChrisF used but I don't think I'll have the funds. I have made A short list but it will come down to funds and what kind of a deal I can find. This is my short list: 1)360Benelli 2) 81-82 suzuki GS450s 3)Honda CX 500 or maybe even Suzuki Xs. Any ideas or insight would be greatly appreciated. Anyone know of any deals out there?? Troy

That is a nice deal on that seat. Was that from eBay? I'm caught between saving the time to make one or saving the cost.
