brakes stop you by converting kinectic energy to heat energy through friction
i stated that the pistons are pulled back by the square cross section oring seals
some dont believe, iognorance abounds,
it is a stone cold fact all of our automotive and mc atv etc are the same exact design principle and the seal is active in containing the pressure and as a mechanical aid in that it retract the piston this is one reason they stick when very old hard unpliable fuul of gunk etc
you dont have to believe it but if one was to actually educate themselves........
 
xb is right about the o-rings. When you apply pressure to the system it pushes the piston out and compresses the o-ring against the outer wall of the bore. When you release the pressure the o-ring relaxes and and pulls the piston back with it a few thousandths of an inch. When I was building race car calipers in the 90's any time a racer complained of brake drag when hot we would replace the square o-rings with round ones that compressed and relaxed more than the square one thus eliminating the issue.
 
yep it is the distortion
and the square wants to stay square so it pulls back
if the piston needs to actually travel it does slide through and when it stops the process is put in re-set you might say

if you think about it is an astoundingly genius design element i cant imagine that they initially designed hyd brakes this way ,you wonder if it was intuition accident or dumb luck
 
I'm not sure anyone was saying XB was wrong :o There's a good video out there of how the brakes work with that square cross section, very informative. When I was first starting out working on bikes, I thought the square sections were actually angled...due to the age of my caliper. It would work one way, but would seize if in backwards....but that was when I was 14 :)

Round ones eh? Very interesting, never thought you could use a round one in there!

wrong ? ah the one guy maybe implied it, no worry, i'm never wrong posting technical elements,i base it on proven knowns, others ? they simply need to educate themselves or continue to look like ignorant fools

Theres nothing to make the pad "retract" as you are describing. It simply stops putting pressure on the disc when you release the master. You couldnt slip a piece of paper through the two surfaces at rest. If there was a gap at rest, braking would be delayed and sudden. No bueno.



i had never heard of a round one i am sure those guys were doing something that was proven though in the race application size and material is critical
