Suzuki GR650 - back to work...

Re: Suzuki GR650- almost riding......

Rich...glad I could help. The GR rocks and it was a blast to ride. Thanks.

Re: Suzuki GR650- almost riding......

Ok......got to ride it a little the past couple days and the brakes are getting better and better. The pads are brand new and the rotors had some "garage dirt" on them, so they are still improving with use.

I lowered the headlight bucket about 3/4" and the clipons about 1/4". There is a slight oil leak coming from the oil pan even with a NOS gasket- probably missed a little chunk of the old gasket under there. This payday I will be ordering a new muffler, and I'm going to look at replacing the tail light with a larger/ more visible one. Nothing massive, maybe one from a older enduro bike. The carbs need some tuning for sure- bigger pilots and mains but I don't want to get too involved on them if since I plan on getting some VM's soon. Plenty of small stuff obviously needs done, but getting to rip around on it is a blast!

I'll try to get some more pics and such throughout the week. Thanks everybody!

Re: Suzuki GR650- almost riding......

I think I've been under a rock :o . Brother the bike looks fantastic! I have a bunch of reading to catch up on. I promise I'll make the time somehow. Wow man Congratulations on a fantastic build!

Re: Suzuki GR650- almost riding......

Ha! Thanks Troy. Next time we all meet up, I can give you the details in person. So you don't have to read 30+ pages here........

Glad you like it though. Means an awful lot.

Re: Suzuki GR650- rockin the twin! And ironing the details.

Nice Rich, calipers look great! Glad you are riding her.

Re: Suzuki GR650- rockin the twin! And ironing the details.

Thanks Mike. Still have some touching up to do on that front wheel. The hub has a couple spots and I had a couple spills of brake fluid on the calipers. All in due time.......

The biggest problem I found since riding the bike was the bouncing of the front wheel. Come to find out, the bead of the tire was actually not against the lip on the wheel. I had to deflate the wheel, soap up the bead, inflate it again, and rinse repeatedly. But now it's at least a smooth ride.

Tonight & tomorrow: all the smaller stuff.

Re: Suzuki GR650- rockin the twin! And ironing the details.

Damn Rich! I've been short on free time lately, so I see I'm late to the party. What a change though! Looks good, man. Glad to hear you're tearing around on it.

Re: Suzuki GR650- rockin the twin! And ironing the details.

man rich, the bike looks sweet!! great work!

Re: Suzuki GR650- rockin the twin! And ironing the details.

Thanks gents. Been plugging away at some of the smaller stuff. Sandblasted the muffler clamp and painted it black, lowered the front end 1/2", added some padding to the seat (that tiny bit of neoprene wasn't cutting it), and ordered a new taillight. For reference sake, here's a before and after:

Brother, that is amazing. I can't believe how much different that is. I'm glad you posted that before and after. I swear man, I would think that these were different bikes if I didn't know any better. Killer. So glad you went with the spokes. That's the biz.

Re: Suzuki GR650- rockin the twin! And ironing the details.

This turned out very well! I'd love to see more pics and maybe an update on the GR forum ;D

Re: Suzuki GR650- rockin the twin! And ironing the details.

Oops! You're right......been a while since I've updated over there......

And welcome to the dark side Kwazy! How is the GR treating you?

Re: Suzuki GR650- rockin the twin! And ironing the details.

Well done on a bike that is hard to do!

Re: Suzuki GR650- rockin the twin! And ironing the details.

Thanks Tyler. I don't know if you've noticed, but my neighbor missed the bottom line on the red paint. I marked it just like we talked about, but then the marking got wet sanded off.....oh well.

Forgot to add: I started messing with the jets yesterday. I bumped the mains last year by one size (individual UNI pods) but with the K&N and 2-1 exhaust I went up 2 more sizes. Also raised the needles to help out the midrange as well. Not perfect, but I'm also not afraid of blowing a hole in the motor now.

Re: Suzuki GR650- rockin the twin! And ironing the details.

Thanks Lou!

So I've been at work the past couple nights and haven't had a chance to do too much. Maybe I'm being paranoid, but the tiny size and lack out light from my tail light had been bugging me. So I bought a Hodaka tail light on ebay and it came in:

I wont be putting any effort into installing it until next weekend, but I did rest it on the seat to get an idea how it will look/fit. Sorry for the terrible pics- early morning and my other hand was ready to catch anything that starts falling......Looking at the seat from the rear:

And another from the side. The lens will be recessed about halfway in:

Re: Suzuki GR650- rockin the twin! And ironing the details.

You're gonna cut the seat????

Lucky I trust your abilities, or I'd have to throw away my rainy day money to fly up there and liberate it from the knife. In all seriousness, or at least as much as I can muster, I have to say I like the look of the light. With it recessed it should look amazing. Kind of a 50's Caddy bullet light meets 70's stock vibe.

Re: Suzuki GR650- rockin the twin! And ironing the details.

Haha! Sorry Crescent- but remember how big it was before? A little more off the back wont hurt......

Re: Suzuki GR650- rockin the twin! And ironing the details.

I think cresent may be worried about damage to the slick paint? Light works for me and I agree, once recessed it will fit perfect. You could trim the light instead and just drill a hole for the bulb and wires, but as long as you mask off and are careful you should save the paint from chipping.

Looks great Rich.
