T500 2stroke Oil Consumption

Does anyone have a rough idea of how much 2stroke oil the T500 uses per gallon of gas. Would it be around say 25:1 ratio? I have to fit an oil tank in my seat hump but I only have room for about a 1 litre tank if I buy a pre-made plastic tank! I could make a custom aluminum tank and get it a bit bigger but it's a lot of hassle and expense to do that.

I'd try to fit something closer to 1.5L if at all possible. Not from a consumption perspective but because it's easier to tip in a whole liter/quart when filling the oil tank.

At 25:1 (very rich on the oil) it would burn that 1 liter of oil per every 25 L of fuel.Assuming a tank capacity of say 4 gallons or 16L, that's one bottle of oil per fill.

In the real world you should see oil consumption much lower than that at closer to 40:1 IIRC overall depending on how hard you cane it.

I have a catalogue on it's way from US Plastics so I'll see if there is something in there slightly larger that will work.

I do intend to give it a good caning for sure.

I'm not sure of the numbers, but the 500 will do literally hundreds of miles on the stock tank full. A litre would be fine in my opinion, after all, it's no bother to keep an eye on the level.

Mine goes through a full tank of oil every 1200 miles or so. I can't remember capacities, but I get around 100 miles per tank of gas.

Do you have the stock oil tank? I know that the stock tank is 1.8ltr.

This might be a good time to revisit Gordon Jenning's "two stroke tuner's handbook"
Jennings found that very high ratios of fuel/oil actually produced more HP/torque . Aside fron that an interesting read and very nearly the gospel for aircooled smokers .

Kop,

I was beginning to think that I was the only one with a copy of that article from Mr Jennings. I quote it often.

In this case, we're dealing with a 500 Suzuki twin with autolube pump with variable output and they don't go through a lot of oil - even when adjusted correctly.

Titan is right that 1 L would be sufficient, but that makes it hard to fill from a 1L bottle of oil unless the tank is dry or you carry a part full bottle of oil with you. I guess the other way to look at that is to top up the oil tank at home and if stuck in the bush, just use enough of whatever oil is available to get home again.

I'm going to guess it's closer to 1.5L, but it's definitely right around that range. I put a quart into it about a month ago (it was VERY low) and covered a couple of hundred miles. I tried to add a second quart on Friday and it wouldn't take all of it.

Teaser, I too have Gordon Jennings book I used to use it for figuring out expansion chambers for go-karts.

Sounds like a litre will work. Bike will be used mostly for track days so it won't be doing a ton of miles.

1 liter of diesel per gallon of gasoline is a great mix for 2-stroke bikes. Or so I'm told by some guy from the UK who rides an MZ250 named stinkybob and attacks people with clawhammers.

I plan on trying this mix on a variety of different engines before I get myself a 2-stroke bike and perhaps kill it.

For what exactly? Diesel has more lubricity than most fuels but it's not an oil. I wouldn't use it for anything except perhaps a diesel motor.

Some people might think the MZ to be a mite agricultural, but it needs to be treated better than using diesel.

Diesel, whatever the ratio, is in no way suitable for a stroker.

Do you mean to use in four-strokes first? If so, you will be unhappy with the result!

Crazy

Just read Kopcicle and Teazer's posts on page one. I've got a copy of the Jennings book on my Kindle so it can go wherever I go.

A. Graham Bell in his 'Performance Tuning in Theory & Practice' said:

"My experience has shown that the more oil you pour into a two-stroke, the harder it runs."

But also:

"If your bike is dribbling oil out of the exhaust then you are running too much oil ... for your riding speed"

If you have service manual there is a spec for oil pump delivery per min at various rpm
You could work things out from there. 1.5 liters will be plenty, but, it's better to have tank higher than it is wide so oil sloshing around doesn't cause air to get into pump.
In my experience they are NOT self bleeding and you will seize pistons if air gets in

No I wouldn't use it on a four stroke, what would be the point? I was thinking more along the lines of a old weed whacker or something. Im not a complete idiot.

No harm in experimenting with different things.

Ok, fine. I'll just shut up and stop, clearly I AM an idiot and experimentation is wrong and foolish. Lets just buy whatever products they say is best and believe them.

Ya know Swivel, you're a dick. But then that has been covered extensively in other threads.

Diesel could work in an old MZ, they were designed for <80 octane fuel (I think 67~74 octane for the 60's~70's motors?)
It's an easy way to lower octane rating a fair amount ;D ;D
You would still need oil though

Bottom line is that Diesel is an oil and it does a great job of keeping injectors lubed, but it is very poor at lubricating in high temperature conditions such as those encountered inside a two stroke motor.

Diesels use oil such as Rotella to lube their pistons and valves etc. They don't rely on diesel fuel to lubricate the whole motor. There's nothing wrong with experimenting if you have a scientific mind and rigorous approach necessary to evaluate results and to eliminate variables.

The rest of us read as much as we can and then decide what we want to use. Motorcycle Mechanics/performance bikes did a couple of tests on oils for two strokes and they concluded that the best race oils are not needed on cooking two strokes, but really cheap oils and non two stroke oils did not work as well as good quality motorcycle specific oils.

There are great two stroke oils for snowmobiles and PWCs that are not so good in motorcycle applications.

And Swivel chose to quote the end of your sentence which was probably intended to be humorous, so it must be an attempt at humor in his post too. Unfortunately humor doesn't always come cross that way as I have found a few times in my posts where it was not interpreted the way it was intended.

It's like one of your mates expressing surprise at something you said and replying along the lines of "fuck off mate". you know the guy and the context, so you know it's a friendly jab. On the other hand if you meet some angry skinhead and he gets in your face and says the same thing - it's offensive and a threat. On the net it's had to see the context.

Really , was it that odd coming from me ? The FLH is distinctly more odd . I mean doesn't every die hard two stroke tuner have a copy of Saint Jennings gospel set in the proper alter surrounded by Castroil R empties and conical section templates ?
