what wheel setup is this?

Wider rims are best option, you don't need massive tyres that don't fit properly.
You can fit correct size tyres on correct rims ad it looks and handles much better
 
cb450's run 1.85X19 front and 1.85X18 rear correct? what size is the XS650 wheels? gonna start craigslisting around.. if the wheel that was on the rear of my bike is indeed a harley rim, someone said i should try and sell it cause it might be worth something? looks like crap but i suppose one mans junk is another mans treasure..
 
1.85 is OK on front but fit 2.15 minimum to rear.
I'm using 2.15 front and rear on some of my 360's and stock rims on others with 90/90 F, 110/90 R
Brendon has 1.85 F, 2.15 R on his 360 and said handling was noticeably better with 90/90, 110/90 tyres swapped from stock rims

If you fit 2.15 rims, don't go bigger than 100/80 or 90 front and 120/80~90 rear or it will handle 'funny'
 
ok, im hoping to run a 110/90 front and 120/90 rear.. so there are some changes that will need to be made with rim size. if im running a 110/90 front, what size rim should i keep a lookout for?
 
Use 2.15 f/r
110 F is OK on a tracker/brat but not so good on a cafe', it's just too wide

i guess im a little confused, like people sell the wheel hoops on ebay or wherever, but they are just hoop, 36 spoke, so why do they tell you its made for a specific bike? if its 2.15X18, and its just the hoop, doesnt that make it universal to whatever you wanna lace into it?
 
The wheels can be differently drilled for different hubs. A front hoop cant be laced to a rear hub due to the angle the spoke joles are drilled (some can be drilled and shimmed with washers, but that is a differebt story all together). Your best bet is to stay within stock specs or slightly larger. You could goo with a 2.5 width and run a 110 or 120 rear safely. There is no real benefit to big rear tires on these bikes, in fact it can sometimes be detrimental. They handle better with the skinnes. Your best (cheapest) bet is to find a decent stock wheel, then clean and paint or powder. You can go as far as you want to though.
 
for 19.99 it's worth it just for the rim, re-sell the hub and spokes, plenty of people looking for rear disc hubs ;D
I think if you go wider than 120 you need to fit a 520 chain/sprockets to get clearance plus, the brake torque arm may need front tab welded further out on swing arm (bending it for clearance isn't a good idea, it can straighten and cut tyre)
Wider rim will make tyres look bigger as they fit properly
 
could i put a wider tire of a 2.15" rim? im not too concerned with getting crazy wide in the rear, but i love the look of a good fat set of tires on these cafe's.. i also have to buy a new chain anyways, so your saying throw a 520 on there, then pick up a new front and rear sprocket? glad you are mentioning the rear brakes, cause i had a question there as well.. when i pick up a set of rear sets, and mount them farther back, i wont be using any of that crap pivet bar type stuff the stock one uses correct? can i cut all that crap out of frame to make some more room? thanks PJ and Kanticoy, putting things in perspective for a cafe newbie here..
 
No problem man. Dont put a wider tire on a 2.15 hoop. You run into problems with tire siatortion when you do that because the contact patch gets pinched. It just isnt safe. You can get a nice profile tread design in stock sizes. And if you do lace up something like a 2.5 wide rear, the 110 or 120 looks much bigger on these old bikes than you think. They will rip corners much better and safer that way than with a big ol wide rear. Just to put into perspective, I laced up a 3.5 rear on my last build and am onlu running a 130 and it looks HUGE! But I also built a one off swing arm etc. As fast as the rearsets, the best working designs out there in btu opinion utilize the stock pivot, etc. and use linkage to that from the rearset. You can do it using direct linkage, but you have to be careful with actuation angles and such to assure full pressure to the rear brake arm on the hub. There are loss and lots of posts on here relating to rearset design and if do a lot of research before you cut everything off. Once you do that your options are limited. yeah you werent kidding when you said "one off rear swing arm", looks real good. ok so im pretty set when thinking i want to run a 120 rear.. so we are ok if im using a 2.15 rear wheel hoop? then lace in my hub. kanticoy i posted a link with a whole rear wheel with hub that was on ebay, whats your thoughts on that.. i can get the whole wheel shipped for 37 dollars.. check it out and let me know your thoughts on that. my finger will wait lingering over the buy it now button..
 
ps that whole bike you posted a pic of looks, sick, so if you have a second, throw up some more and let me get a good look at it!
 
On a 2.15 I wouldn't go above a 110. I am running a 110 on my 400f on stock wheels (2.15), and they just fit witjout pinching. I think a 120 would be too big. If you want to go to a 120 I would look for a 2.50. And thanks on the bike compliments. Here are a few shots from barbers.

ok. looks like i will stick with the 2.15 that i found on ebay, and go no bigger than 110 for the rear... now cause this wheel is not specifically for a honda, i will be purchasing what kind of spoke kit? just a stock one, 18", that is specifically for a cb cause it needs to match my hub, correct?
 
As long as it has the correct spoke count and drilled at the proper angles, you should be OK. Aftermarket wheels use larger nipples, so you may need to for something about that........but you won't know until you see the wheel.

Youll have a little play, but since its a rear wheel you should have no problem. Like rich said, you wont know on the spoke nipple size problems until you have the wheel and the spokes in hand. I think youre on the right path.

Your OK to 120 on a 2.15 rim,it is about the max size though
2.50 is minimum for a 130 tyre.
I wouldn't cut all the stuff off frame, I prefer brakes to work properly, reversing lever and weird pivot positions may look 'cool' but don't work very well
You could convert to cable operation, then frame stuff wont matter but you will probably need to weld some cable stops
 
k fellas, just bought that 2.15 rear wheel that i found on ebay, now i need to find a good spoke set, new or used i dont really care, gonna paint them anyways, anybody know a good place to pick a spoke kit up? thanks!
