Wrapping up the XS transformation

You guys otta hear this thing howl! It's really great to see a quality project such as this, out on the street as much as this one is! ;D

Good on ya! ;)

Thanks Drewski.... If I could just get around to installing a quality tank! I really need to get my 750 motor on the go so I can get a little bit of a BITE to go with the howl ;D

Baby's back!

I finally got the alloy tank back on the girl. She had been missing a little sex appeal :-* I still have to wet sand and lay another coat of clear after things cure for a week. A full load of fuel should give me mega range ;D

I got side-tracked today while doing an oil change and ended up taking some weight out of the magnetic drain plugs. These things are a massive 27mm :o I couldn't believe how heavy these were. What was Yamaha thinking??? I might make up some aluminum plugs with smaller magnets. Maybe a Honda SOHC tappet cover plug would work. Does anyone have one they could measure up for me? I'd need the OD of the threaded portion and the distance between thread peaks for pitch.

Oh... and I decided to use Shell Rotella T with Lucas Engine Break-in additive to boost the ZDDP.

I have some spare honda tappet covers that you can try!!..
I"ll bring them next tuesday...

This is the sort of stuff that probably doesn't rate very high in a cafe build but it's shit like this that would keep me up at night if I didn't do something about it ;)

Well if you make some nice aluminum jobbies with magnets, sign me up for a set!

I still have some billet aluminum fork tops for 35mm XS forks. Guys - attention to detail separates the hacks from the "builders" let me know if you want some. ;) These can easily be converted to air-assist.

Re: XS transformation revisited

Now that riding season is over I have started in on a few "upgrades". 270 deg re-phased crank is assembled and ready for final truing & welding. It's fussy work so I'm leaving it until i can string together 4 consecutive hours without interruption. The Radian swing arm is mounted for mock-up. The shock mounts need to me moved slightly closer together. I am modifying the swing arm to take the larger XS axle. I ordered up some 105ksi yield hollow bar to make a lighter and stronger axle. I will make a small lot for radian swing arms and stock swing arm. They won't be cheap, the material alone is $45 each.

Will they fit under a set of Clubman bars?
They sit 1/2" higher than the stock caps. If you have a minimum of 1/2" clearance now between your bars and forks you should be OK.
