I'm sure a 140mm tire has been mounted to an XS850 hundreds of times.
It's not recommended, but I see enough bikes online with it that I doubt it's dangerous.
If it was me, and I already had the tire mounted, I would absolutely try it!

Yeah, I think I'll just give it a shot and see how it handles. If I don't like it I'll probably go down to a 130/70 or even a 120/70. The front tire has a really low profile, so a lower profile rear may actually look better. Won't know till I know!

Its a 110mm stock, so 140 is not optimal but i doubt it will be outright dangerous.. i would not go wider than 120 on these weird old rims though.
But, curious to hear how it handles!

So based on some additional input and resources it sounds like avoiding an "egg shape" and keeping the tire smooth/round is the biggest concern with squeezing a big tire on a narrow rim. I took some shots to show how the tire shape held up and I think it is OKAY.

And I'm okay with the front/back profiles in comparison to the huge sidewall on the rear tire that was on it when I got it.

SO stoked on how the satin silver came out. Should compliment the satin black well. Planning to drop the engine in tonight, which means it might be back to roller state by the weekend.

It really pops in the sun.

That DOES look sweet!
That color will really pop under the black bodywork, and around the black engine and running gear.

Awesome weather here this weekend so I got to work on the bike in a t-shirt, in the sun. It was great.

Anyway, I got the front end on and threw the tank and seat on for a little mockup. Really excited about how it's coming together!

Debating which filters to run. Thoughts between UNI and K&N?

I've heard goods things about both but can't decide which to get. Any input here from people who have used them? UNI's are a little less money, but K&N has the name and reputation behind it. There are also these UNI/PODs but I'm hesitant to use PODs ever again. The UNI name makes them sound nicer, but they might just be cheap pods covered with a uni foam filter.

That last one LOOKS like false advertising to me...I prefer the UNI (original) versions because you can oil them and clean them "easily" and keep your engine more clean than the K&N's or at least that's my opinion after reading tons of hate on all filters that are aftermarket it seemed that the UNI did better in tests....now if I could only find that data...(so don't take my word for it, it's been years since I had seen that info)

Also, that mockup looks fantastic! ;D

Edit: Although not for a motorcycle (as our choices are quite a bit smaller than automotive) this gives you some idea of a "test" that was done.

After review, the k&N flowed more, but that means it also let more crap through choose your poison.

the k&n's need to look dirty and gunky to filter better the layer of oily dirt helps filtering
only the K&N's you are looking at will flow decent air, if you are going 2 stage foam you need to go bigger than what you are looking at so far, get the biggest things that will fit in the space you have

Bsa as we all know you are all about the stock airbox (and no doubt they are the best things for a stock bike as they were made for the damn thing). Absolutely no hate sending your way, but did you look at his bike? With the mono shock in there you won't be getting a stock box in there And it's ugly afterall haha

It hadn't crossed my mind about what you said about flow though with the 2 stage filters, and going as BIG as you can. I'll think of that the next time I can't use the stock box either. Good call sir 8)
