I think you provided your own answer. the depressed start disconnects the headlight connection. the fact that this is always on suggests that the headlight disconnect is always on, even if you have removed the starter from the circuit

sorry error there - should read that after the fuse it comes up the harness on the brown/red.

does the brown and red wire going to the left hand controller have current? does the black and red from the right controller draw current? The right hand main head light switch effectively connects the black live feed to the black/red leaving the controller. This then goes through the fuse...

you might also need to consider diodes for the indicators, if you are intending on sharing an LED for both left and right flasher.

I have swapped it out. very easy, all the plugs fitted and the ease of connecting the new controllers/switchgear into the headlight bucket as opposed to bullets under the tank made it much easier.
