i have had the whole engine apart several times ( last owner managed to drop some bolts in the case ) and thought the same thing at first but ive spun it with the case off and held the idler in, it just doesn't want to engage.

replaced the dying starter motor recently on my gn, however instead of starting everything just spins but doesn't engage, it bump starts fine but when I try to use the starter it just sounds like and electric drill. is there something simple ive done or do I need to replace the starter clutch...

We eventually found the wires but the wiring harness was such a mess we have replaced it, however some of the plugs didn't match up so we have mostly been putting wires together to test what works, we can get the lights to come on but so far the starter solenoid is nt clicking no matter what...
